View Full Version : Fish in the Horse Trough

I don't know if any of you will have an answer for me, but I told a
coworker that I'd ask you.
I live in central Texas where the summers get very hot -- often in the
100s (ºF). A few folks have told me that they keep some sort of fish in
their cattle and horse troughs (one said she buys the feeder fish for
this purpose and they work fine). What my coworker and I are wondering
is, doesn't the water get too hot for these fish to survive? The water
in these troughs must get nearly as hot as the air temps. Or does it?
Is there any one sort of fish that would be better suited for this
task (eating the mosquito larvae) than the others?
Thanks in advance,

I have minnows in two ponds, goldfish in another,
and I don't have problems with mosquitos (from
those ponds). But my fish ponds are shaded and
have a ton of plants.
I think I'd be less concerned about heat, more
concerned about water quality in the situation
you describe. But perhaps minnows are
hardy enough to survive the conditions. They're
sold as feeder fish in pet stores and are cheap, if
you want to try some.

I have kept feeder type goldfish in watering troughs for over 20 years
without a problem......They work just fine at keeping any algae down,
over winter just fine in this part and temperatures in the summer
never have seemed to affect them either. SOme troughs are under trees
or partial shade others are in full sun and all do equally as
well.....in the hot summer days in Alabama..
