View Full Version : Lights and tank cover question.

January 1st 06, 04:35 AM
I have read some of the discussions about whether to use a glass cover
between your lights and the water surface. I have added a PC fixture to
my 29gal and have the fixture sitting on egg crate which sits on top of
the tank. This fixture has a plexiglass pane which I was thinking about
removing leaving nothing but the egg crate between the lights and the
water surface.

Will the lamps and wiring be safe from water damage? Will the heat from
the lamps prevent any condensation on critical parts?

Thanks,
Mark

There should be a barrier between the lights and the water. Corrosion
will occur, IME. A possible exception would be halides suspended
further from the water surface.
I, also have a PC fixture with the plexi sheet that slides in. I
remove it about 2x a month to keep it clean and keep it from
affecting the fixture's output.

Unless your light fixture has the rubber end caps I would keep the
cover glass in place.....Its not the water etc getting on the bulb so
much its the moisture or salt getting into thr contact pin sockets and
making corrosion. Rubber type end caps prevent that.
