View Full Version : Anyone know anything about Gertrude's Blue Eye Fish (AKA Rainbow)

Spotted some of these little fish at the LFS today (on special offer to
clear). From my initial googling they seem to be tiny Rainbow fish. I'm
looking for something to put in my Hex tank following a total wipe out
when they got overfed while we were away - long story and under control
now - and I lost my gobies....

I was planning on setting the Hex up again this week - have kept the
filter in another tank so it's ready to go - and I'm wondering if this
unusual fish might not be a suitable occupant (Hex is 7.5 UK gall).

Anyone know anything about them?

TIA
Gill

Do a google on "Home of the Rainbowfish".

BTW, I'm jealous - never seen any blue-eyes at our pet stores. I'm
thinking about some fork-tail blue-eyes (P. furcatus) for a tank of
mine. There's also a P. conniea or some such that's nice, but quite
rare.

Hi Gill,

According to Baensch/Riehl Aquarium Atlas (Mergus II), pseudomugil gertrudae
exists in 3 varieties:
1. Yellow-wing (Jardine River, Australia)
2. White-wing (Cairns/Innisfall, Australia)
3. Red-wing (Darwin, Australia)
Recommended water conditions:
Temp.: 25 - 30 °C
pH: around 6.5
Total Hardness: 4 - 8° dH = 70 - 140 ppm CaCO3
Sand ground preferred
Feed with small live food or flake food.

I am not sure about the lifetime of p. gertrudae. It might be a seasonal
fish :-(

Anyway, they are continuous breeders, so you might be able to keep your
population.

Thanks,

I read that they are short-lived - "treat as annuals" was the phrase used.

I now have them spread across 3 tanks. I've been noticing differences in
behaviour depending on the density of the planting - if the planting is
not high and dense they seem to all spend their time at the top of the
tank, even if the plants are dense at the bottom.

I've seen this twice now. The first occassion was were the tank was not
densely planted - all of them went to the top until I added more plants.
Now, I have moved some into my Hex tank which I planted quite thickly
with grasses (vallis I think) but this does not reach up to the top of
the tank - those I moved are all at the top again. The only tank where I
haven't seen this behaviour is the one that is full of a mix of live and
fake plants but very dense. My conclusion is that for them to be at
their happiest the tank not only has to be densley planted at ground
level but also needs tall growth as well.
