Hi I was wondering what is the proper or a suitable material for the
foam stuff you put between the tank and the table to stablize the tank
and absorb shock? Is Polystyrene ok? Also now thick does it need to be
for a 2ft tank?

Polystyrene is fine, any foam would be okay. It just needs to be
think enough to take the strain off any high spots on the stand or the
tank.

I don't use any on any of my tanks.

I get the 1/2" thick "beadboard" at a home supply store and cut it about
a 1/2" larger than the tank in length and width. I seal the edges with
duct tape.

The stuff is messy to cut - do it outside if possible.

The extruded foam insulation board would be better and less messy to
cut, but it costs more.

Polystyrene (brand name Styrofoam) is available in expanded form (small
bubbles of foam pressed together) or extruded form (very small air
bubbles held in a more solid slab). For small tanks, the expanded
(1/4-3/8") is a little better as it compresses more easily. Expanded
also works well with larger tanks, but you need to go a bit thicker (1/2
to 3/4"). Extruded is much nicer to cut (less mess) and if used inside
an aquarium (under rockwork), extruded is a little better than expanded
(more difficult to fall apart from age, rocks or fish). hth
