I have 2 1 inch gf in a 10L tank ith pebbles and weed, do not know
gender and found it hard to work it out, just want to know, if they
are heterozexual little buggers, will they breed or not, would the
small tank make them not want to.

I was also told they would grow (1 inch) they have not grown at all,
and I am quite pleased as they are currently quite cute.

Any ideas

Hi Kia,
I don't know what is going on with your fish not growing. Mine grow like
mad. I'm already considering a full fledged pond, and the fish are only
2.5" and 4" respectively. They were fingerlings in September and November.
It could be a matter of perception, as we tend to look at them a LOT, and
they just seem like they're not growing. Try to measure them relative to
something solid in the tank. When I did this, I started to notice just how
fast they are growing. It also seems to get faster as they get a bit of
size to them. Just like kids, if you blink twice the little buggers will
be asking for college tuition! LOL
As for breeding . . you may have to wait a while. I understand that they
should not be bred till they are 3 yrs old. You also have to consider that
it is almost impossible to tell the sex while they are young. Once they
mature, they will start to show signs of gender ie: the males get little
pimple like bumps around the gill plates and/or front fins and the females
get a very rounded belly from being full of eggs. I also heard that the
males get a thicker leading edge to thier pectoral fins too. I've never
bred any, so I really don't know, but this is what I've gleened from
listening to others. You may want to get more advice from some of the more
experienced fish keepers on here. They have helped me out with a lot of
issues.

Best of luck!

hi keving thanx for that, never knew there was so much in having
goldfish, I am a cat person really with 3 little darlings, but one
morning I just woke and thought "I want goldfish" so I went and blew
$60NZ and got these little ones, I am so in love with them, yet they
still remain nameless, my idiot friends could only come up with things
like chips and fillet I must keep an eye on this group and keep
learning.

BTW Kia Ora is the indigenous greeting in NZ, my nick is Squirrel :)

Regards

Your tank is too small for even one goldfish as they need at least 10
gallons per fish to grow normally, stay healthy and breed. Healthy well
cared for GF can reach one foot in size! Yes about 31 cm. They will breed
when 1 year old or less, depending on the conditions, their health,
day-length etc.

Then they are becoming stunted due to too small a space, questionable water
quality and or not enough food.

> Any ideas

Please go out and buy at least a 20 long tank for them.......... start
there.

Hi Kia,
As for breeding . . you may have to wait a while. I understand that they
should not be bred till they are 3 yrs old.

Healthy GF will breed their first spring if they're healthy and water
quality is reasonably good.

This is usually how we can tell the sexes apart. I go mainly by the white
"bumps" on the male's gill covers. It's a dead giveaway. ;-)

You may want to get more advice from some of the more
experienced fish keepers on here. They have helped me out with a lot of
issues.

See Squirrel,
I told you these guys would jump right in to help you out. They helped me
sort my act out, and nobody was the least bit mean in the process. These
guys just want to make sure you get the right advice so you can enjoy your
fish properly.

See Squirrel,
I told you these guys would jump in to help you. And the amazing thing is,
they are normally very nice about it, but direct enough to put you on
course. Here is a great link on tank loading. You may find it helpful.

Hope this helps a bit.
