View Full Version : positioning Rocks

Can someone tell me if I have my rocks set up in the right way IF there is a
right way. I see that a lot of people sort of stack them all in the middle
and I haven't done them that way so I want to be sure that I am not harming
or hindering any growth with my current set up.

And this coral I have I took a piece off about 2 weeks ago and they are both
thriving, was that luck or is this species ok to do that with?

This looks like a star polyp:

They grow pretty easily and can be cultivated in the manner you have done.
BTW, what is that Aptasia growing on the rock underneath the coral?

Your aquascaping looks nice to me. It is all in how you want your reef to
appear, and how you'll be able to place corals. I change my rockwork whenever a
new coral arrives and simply won't fit anywhere. ;)

ok great I was afraid that by blocking some stuff from the light I would get
bad bacteria or something. Chris do mean that brown thing that is below the
coral on the rock? I thought that was a kid of algae or weed, I thought
aptaisa was white.Do I need to get rid of them? There are a lot.

Another reason I had questions about my rock placement is that I seem to
have a lot of sand floating in the tank. I only have the one power head so I
thinking that when I had to change tanks a while back that the fine sand and
the medium sand got mixed and its the fine sand that keeps getting blown
around. Can I put something over the sand like some crushed rock or would
that defeat the purpose of having the DSB?
thanks,
Kelly

Your "fine sand" will weight down by slime in due time. You can reposition
your PowerHead to other location or point to a different angle to avoid
hitting your sand. Or decrease the powerhead current / flow.
I would not put in any crushed rock or coral .

Hi Kelly
The picture you've posted isn't too clear. I've had aptasia that were a drab
brownish colour before and your's caught my eye. I'm not sure what it is in
your tank though. Is there any way you can get a higher resolution shot of
the anenome looking thing. Its on the rock to the lower right of the coral,
where the two rocks rest against each other. There's something that
resembles a small anenome, just not clearly enough to ID. It could be a
harmless hitchhiker, but worth having a second look...

Chris

yep I'm the proud father of about 2 dozen aptasia. All gone now but luckily
I found out what they were before they really took off :>)

How'd you confirm this? And, how'd you get rid of them?

I saw one at my LFS. She had just had an outbreak and I spotted one she had
missed. To kill them I injected them with vinegar (on her recommendation).
Looks like I have to go back and get a few of them again cause they managed
to survive but I got about 90% of them.

I have quite a lot of them in the bubble trap area of my refugium, but they
are not a problem in the main tank or the refugium proper. I have found
that peppermint shrimp eat them.

My Peppermint shrimp took out all my aptasia in the first night and no
problem ever since. He hasn't eaten any of the coral polyps, although my
spaghetti worm has either moved or mysteriously disappeared. Just be sure
to get the Lysmata Wurdemanni (supposedly reefsafe)and not the L.
Californicus (supposedly not).
