View Full Version : How fast do flagfish grow?

I just had the oddest experience. I was feeding the outdoor 38 gallon
tank and counting fishy noses. I sat very still for a while and my
reclusive pair of Florida flagfish (Jordanella floridae) came out from
the weeds. Then, to my shock, a third adult flagfish came swimming out!
I added TWO flagfish to this tank about two months ago, one male and one
female. I'm certain there were only two fish in that bag. I didn't
think it was possible for a fish the size of a flagfish to grow to adult
size in two months. Has anyone bred these critters?

I don't know anything about Flagfish... well maybe just a little... I had
about 20... with a constant source of algae and plant matter (and outdoor
insect larvae!), they will grow very quickly (they are related to the
live-fast die-young killifish ;~)....What I want to know is when did you
get altums and when where you going to tell us?? They are in my top ten.
I hope they don't go endangered before I have a chance to put a tank up
on city water.

Ah. I didn't know they were like annuals. The mystery fish makes more
sense now. It's a good thing she's a female. They do have an endless
source of algae. They eat long strands of it from the ends, much like
people eating spaghetti.
Altums? I've only had altums once, ten years ago. I spent a small
fortune on three of them from the store where I worked. The store had
acclimated them with soft, peaty water and I matched the acclimation
conditions as closely as I could in a planted 55 gallon tank. They died
within a week anyway and I have no idea what I did wrong.
I saw an amazing shoal of them in a display tank at a fish store I
visited about 2 hours' drive away. Apparantly that store has a source
from a breeder! They have a huge waiting list and they often don't even
bother to unpack the fish - aquarists simply drop by and take the whole
box. They would be on my top ten list if I got a big tank again, but I
wouldn't try them in under a 90 gal now. The store also has amazingly
healthy angels. I had been looking for a small, healthy marble
angelfish for months and finally found one.

Ooops, my bad. It was altispinosas you said you had, not altums. I'd be
on that waiting list too. I used to get them wild-caught, but I hate the
idea of depleting their natural habitat, and I won't get any personally
until I have 2 suitable tanks. One for a community (large planted tank)
and one for breeding when they pair off :o).

Yes, and the altispinosa has been kicking angelfish butt. The marble
angel is about half grown now while the altispinosa is full sized. It's
going to be interesting to see who does the chasing when the angelfish
reaches adulthood.
