I have 4 Aqua Clear 110s and was thinking about placing a Aqua Clear
Surface Skimmer on one of them.

Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations conserning the Aqua
Clear Surface Skimmer? If so, hows it work for you?

They do an ok job. Just keep in mind they do make noise.

Since there's nothing on the surface of the water in my tanks I wouldn't
need it. Why would this be needed in a FW tank?

that's a good question. is the AC surface skimmer even needed in a FW tank?

this is from the docs:

--cut--

The Aqua Clear surface skimmer removes organic film on the water's
surface and helps improve oxygen exhange. Simply attach to the intake of
your filter.

--paste--

It gets rid of that oil slick looking thing that builds up in some tanks.
That slick supposedly slows O2 transfer.

I've heard of these 'slicks' but haven't seen it in one of my tanks since
the 1970s. I always believed it was caused by all the chopped clams and
squid my x-husband was feeding the fish. Although I use thawed frozen foods
now, they don't get loads of it, and they don't get it every day.

I doubt most tanks would need it however they make a lot of difference
in a marine setup, and in that case they work great as long as you get
them adjusted right. Eheim also makes one for their canister filter.

I have an Aquaclear, and I doubt you need it - the turbulence from the
waterfall return is enough to keep the surface churned. (Heck, unless
the return is baffled in some way, I can't even maintain foating plants).

For example, one night over the weekend my filter failed (stuck snail).
In the morning there was a noticable "scum" floating on top of the tank,
and the tank water was cloudy. Within a few hours of turning the
filter back on, the scum and cloudyness was gone.

Yep if the outflow of the AC is sufficieint to break up any surface
water and any potential film, it will pick up the junk in the filter
just fine.....Perhaps in a tank which you do not have or desire a lot
of surface water turbulance, a skimmer may help. I use a AC surface
skimmer n a paradise fish breeder tank, as a quick means of removing
the reaily accumulated film yu get when feeding some feeds to fry, and
not running a filter 24/7 such as I do on any of my labryinth / bubble
nester fish tanks , or at least not to the point that it creates a ot
of turbulance on the surface. They do work fine for that purpose, but
need a fine mesh screen to keep babies out of intake as well as a foam
filter intake guard on the inlet tube....other than that use, I only
use em on some of my sal****er setups that have lots of corals which
makes lots of film.

"tanks" for everyones input :)

And your right, an AC110 has a massive waterfall. I don't see any reason
to own a surface skimmer.
