View Full Version : how much to feed one goldfish

Bought slightly larger floating pellets this time(medium) for my one
7" goldfish. Does anyone know how many of these pellets should be
used? I feed once per day. Are they like the betta pellets that
expand in size when ingested.

Don't want "Bubbles" to blow up. It's my wife's favourite fish. ;-)

Tough question. A variety of responses (opinions) are available, such as
their stomachs are the size of their eye, to as much as they can eat in
(insert time here).

If you fed Bubbles one pellet per day, he would not starve, however this
diet is known to cause suffering to people ;~).

If you fed Bubbles a half dozen pellets three times a day, he would eat
them all, however this would pollute the tank 18 times faster, so you
need to do water changes and gravel vacuum 18 times more. The fish would
be more likely to fall ill as well (unless it was a 7" Comet in a 20,000g
pond).

Between those two extremes, (ie: 3-4 pellets twice a day), you would
adjust upwards if the tank is warm (>76F) or large (4 foot) and the fish
was very active, - and you would adjust downwards if the tank was colder
(<71F) or smaller or the fish was not very active.

You probably don't want to suddenly deviate down too far from whatever it
has been accustomed to either (that human suffering thing again ;~).

jmo but I hope it helped.

====================
My gold fish get just about all they can eat twice a way. They also get
variety. Small GF get an extra feeding since they're growing and developing
so fast.

Thanks,

I think I'll take your advice and go 3-4 2x/day rather than the 8-10 I
presently gice 1x/day.
