1) Shipping tanks is expensive - manufacturers can do it cheaply because
they can nest tanks and use industrial freight carriers, not commercial
carriers like UPS and Fedex. Any store that will ship you a single tank
is going to charge you full cost of shipping - it's going to be an arm
and a leg, and I also doubt they'll make any guarrantee that it will
arrive in unbroken condition. (Either the seller or the shipping
company.) Your best (and probably cheapest) bet is to open the phone
book and call all of the local pet/fish stores. Even if they don't stock
40g long tanks regularly, if you ask politely, they might order one for
you in their next tank shipment.

2) If you are going to post the same message to multiple newsgroups,
don't post it seperately to each newsgroup. Find the place on your
newsreader where you can list multiple newsgroups on the same message
("crossposting"). That way all of the replies will get sent to everyone
who sees the message, and people with newsreaders so designed can avoid
seeing the message multiple times in all of the newsgroups that they read.

"Crossposting" is a little gauche (you really should pick the one, best
group to post to), but "multiposting" is completely unnessasary.

CuttySark's message isn't appearing on my NS so I'll reply to you and he/she
should see it. The chains don't usually special order tanks for people but
some of the newer ones, these days, may. The mom & pop shops will almost
always be willing to order one or more unstocked tanks for their customers,
even those they seldom see in their store. They hope to gain your business.
From what I've been told the profit on tanks isn't great, maybe 15%. They
make their money on the accessories and fish they sell you after you
purchase the tank.

A 55 gallon (48"x12"x21") at the LFS will be a lot cheaper, odd ball
sizes are more expencive because they do not sell as many.
