I'm accumulating bits and peices, soon Mort's going to practically give me
his skimmer(hee-hee) and I'm getting things as I go along...
but a hydrometer? Where do you find them, what kind is good, ok, best,
etc.... brand names matter?

They are a good tool to get an idea of your salinity, but they aren't perfect
nor always accurate. The best choice is a refractometer, but if you are buying
a Sea Clone at this point, I doubt you'll buy a refractometer.
You can find hydrometers at any LFS or Petsmart/Petco.

Maybe Mort will give you a refractometer.

You'll use it for now, and probably be happy. Later, you'll realize it just
doesn't do the job as you battle one algae after another. ( "The Shadow
knows....." - very old reference)
I've got a Sea Clone in my garage that I refuse to even give away. If I could
fit it through the paper shredder, I'd do it. <grin> There have been some plans
going around using it as a Kalk (Neilsen) reactor, and I may try that out one
day.

Btw, our club just did a group buy on Refractometers for $34 each from Premium
Aquatics. So everything in this hobby doesn't HAVE to cost a fortune.

But that is your opinion, as valid as it is. I don't HAVE an opinion, and I
just want to learn...
If this was April, we'd not be asking this, it'd be, how do I get my remora
to do this.. blah blah..... that's the only reason I even asked....
time.... where does it go....

No problem. Several of us try to steer people clear of certain actions or
products, but everyone has free will to choose what they want to do.
I never would have used one except for the 55g setup I bought a year ago came
with one. Having it hooked up and running, I could see how useless it was. I
had an insump no-name skimmer (venturi style) that was doing better than the
SeaClone. Later I ripped both of them out and replaced them with an Aqua C
EV-200 I bought used.
During a pump failure, I had to borrow the skimmer's Mag 12 to keep my reef
running and took the skimmer offline for a couple of weeks. During that time I
put a CPR Bakpak on my reef to skim. Even emptying the cup daily of the juice
it pulled out, as soon as the EV-200 was put back into action, I couldn't
believe the vile stuff it pulled out for the next 48 hours. It was as if the
CPR did nothing for those two weeks!
