Airstones changing PH level

For months, everytime I turn on my air pump, my PH level shoot up. I
thought it was because the air pump drove the CO2 out resulting the PH
level change.

I finally did an acid test on my airstones. I put them in some PH down
and it boubles like crazy! No wonder they drive my PH level up when I
turn on the air pump!

Just want to share the information with everyone.

What brand are they? How would we know which ones to avoid?

I think most of the sand looking ones are bad. You will have to do a
test to make sure.

I am pretty sure ceramic airstones are totally inert (like rena
microbubblers). Good luck and later!

This is completely to be expected, but it has nothing to do with the
physical makeup of the air stone. Because it bubbles when you dropped in an
acid means nothing important.

More aeration means more O2 exchange which means more dissolved O available
for hydrogen boding to make more hydroxyl ions. pH (potential of Hydrogen)
is precisely a measurement of these kind of water ions.

This isn't so much about air stone aeration as it is dissolved O2. The more
you disturb the surface the more O can be dissolved to make for a higher
pH. Maintaining a carbonate hardness of at least 2-4 dKH will make a big
difference as well, but making this adjustment in a novice fashion may
cause wild pH fluctuations itself if your KH is very low. The more humic
acids you have in your water the less quickly this will effect your pH.
