View Full Version : Feeding Krib Fry

Hi,

I have a 180L well planted and well stocked community tank. Last week my
pair of Kribensis did the cave thing, and now they're busy shepherding a
load of tiny babies along the bottom, keeping all the other fish away.

What can I feed the babies?

Anything they can fit in their mouths :o). A tiny bit of boiled egg yolk
(turn off your filters while you're doing this), or fine grind some flake
food in your fingers, or fry food for egglayers is available at the LFS.
Otherwise, they will wander around picking through algae, uneaten foods
etc, which may or may not be sufficient (and in a 40g, probably would not
be).

Freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. By "freshly hatched" they aren't kidding.
When the nauplii hatch they hava this feedbag of a yolk sac that is the source
of the nutrition. It's the first food for anything that swims that's raised
in captivity - only 5-10% o the worlds annual (huge!) brine shrimp egg market
goes to hobbyists, the rest goes to commercial (aquatic) food producers, lke
the shrmip and fish you buy at the grocery store that's farmed not caught.

There's nothing like it and anything else comes as a distant second. They
can probably survive on finely powdered fish flkaes until the brine shrimp
hatch - less than 24 hrs at 85F or so.

I agree :o). I didn't think of suggesting the shrimp because the fry
were already free-swimming and the longer it takes (getting hatchery,
eggs and hatching) the less useful it is (though still very good).
Another thing which comes to mind is that you can buy packets of Bay
Brand frozen baby brine shrimp.
