View Full Version : Seven arm Starfish

Ok, I took the little guy out and put him on a plate with water. I
think this will be much better.

As you can see he has 7 arms. Four large and three very short.

I don't think he is a serpent starfish unless they go through quite a
change in appearance as they grow. I know the first picture wasn't
the best. I've seen little white serpents and they look like a small
adult.

This guy would like to go back in the water. :)

This is small asterina. Check www.reefcentral.com for more info.

Thanks, I think that is exactly what it is.

Kind of a toss up whether it's harmful or not.

Ct ~

We have several of these in our tank (you can see a pic of one on this
page: http://home.comcast.net/%7E76fxe/oddities.htm

Ours have never harmed anything in the tank. I know someone else had
mentioned one of these articles, but there is some interesting reading
on these critters both here:

http://www.reefs.org/library/article/little_white_starfish.html

and here:

http://www.reefs.org/library/article/coral_eating_starfish.html

Our tank is primarily sps, and I see these stars from time to time, but
they seem to mostly feed off of algae on the rocks.

HTH!

Same for my stars - they seem to prefer algae as well:

I've got a few that only have 2 arms. I don't know where the rest of it went. Or maybe they
split to propagate and I'm seeing half.... :)

Yes Marc, they split this way.

I wish I had some of yours brittle baby stars pictured on your page with 100 ids.
They are very pretty too.

I hope to take a picture of the striped ones I've got as well, but they never come out onto a good
spot!

When I had mine (now they are for some reason extinct in my tank)
I noticed they like to come out when the water is calm at night.
When I was playing with my Lysmata larvae I was turning all pumps
off for 10 minutes or more and then, some day I forgot to turn them
back on and realised after 2 hours that the tank is too quiet...
Then I saw maybe 30 brittle stars crawling on the glass from the
substrate/rocks. Somehow they are intimidated by the water currents.

Here's a pic of an ophiactis brittlestar hitching a ride on the leg of
our blue Linckia:

Great shot, Teri! Good eye to even notice the little guy. Got a bigger version of that I can keep on
my harddrive?

Thanks, Marc ;-)

I should have a higher resolution pic around somewhere -- give me a bit
to dig it up. I bought a new pc a few weeks back, and burnt a bunch of
stuff to CD from the old one, so it's around *somewhere*. ;-)

I appreciate you hunting that down for me. If it is too much trouble, don't worry about it. I did save the
little picture for now, because it is one of those one-of-a-kind shots.
