View Full Version : Question about Platies?

I recently got a bunch of fish from someone who was tearing down their tank.
I got 4 solid yellow Platys in the mix. 2 males 2 females. I was just
wondering is it normal for the females to be 3X the size of the males?? They
are HUGE.

Not 3x, but 2x. They grow at similar rates, but the females can get
twice the size of the males at around 3". It's quite an impressive and
uncommon sight to see. Even more impressive is a 5" Swordtail, which
I've never seen.

Yes, the females appear much larger. It means more space for babies.

Yes. I've seen that before. Or the females you got may be older adults,
and the males younger fish.

I've got 5 females and two males. One of the males is the same
generation as the females, the other male is the grandfather of the
females. Both males look like destroyers next to the female
battleships. They have to fight to get near the food - the females
actually jump out of the water in their feeding frenzy - miniature
sharks :-).

Exactly the same, but their gravid spot might not be as evident,
depending on their colouration. Then you can go a bit by behaviour and
watching the date. Sometimes you can make out the fry's eyes, and then
it will be very soon (within 2-3 days).

They get the same "well rounded" belly the female guppy gets.

Like guppies they're almost born pregnant. Just try to stop them.
In the slim chance the females were raised alone no, they're not
but if they came from a petshop, they're preggers.

The Platys I have had, the males were all smaller. Size has nothing
to do with horniness. The real problem is what to do with all the
fry. I finally separated the boys from the girls. Enough is enough!

==================
Chain stores wont take them but most mom and pop pet stores will. That's
where mine go when the population gets out of hand.
