Help with Cichlids

[Clara Fortune]

I noticed tonight that my male cichlid is nipping at my female cichlid and
her fins and some scales are off of her body. Any suggestions on what to do
for her and how to make the male leave her alone?

The tank they are in is 25 gallons. It's a male and female. I've had them
for almost two months. Male has started to bite at the female and dominent
when food is given. I've added another tunnel for her to hide in and given
her medicine for fins and the bite marks. They had been fine until the last
couple of days. Any suggestions?

The question "What type of Cichlids" is what stands out in the first
response.
We understand that you have a male and a female. But what we need to know
is, What type of cichlid do you have? Angel Fish are cichlids. Oscars are
cichlids. Mbuna from Lake Malawi are cichlids, and the list goes on. There
are thousands of types of cichlids and all of them have different behaviors
and characteristics. It's quite possible you own a species that will never
be content to share space with another fish in a 25 gallon tank. It's also
possible you're just witnessing normal aggression from mating. There are
cichlids that can stay in a ten gallon tank, while others may need a 180
gallon tank or larger to live happily. So, you may be able to see, "What
type of cichlids?" is an important question to answer.

id. If you don't have access to a digital camera, a description of color,
shape and size would help. Were they labeled as "Mixed African Cichlids"
when you bought them?
