Is my ISP's news server really as bad as it appears to be?

I don't know. How bad does it appear to be? :-)

Well, it took about 12 hours for your reply to show up on my
ISP's server.

Better than it used to be though. Lots of posts didn't used to
show up at all.

Sounds like AOL just before they dropped all newsgroups.

I'm using earthlink for my newsgroups server, and I get
post within seconds, of them being posted.

Same with Giganews, been quite happy with it.

Hmmm,
none of the replies you posted have shown up and it's 9:00 PM CST.

Might have to try out giganews.

Network News Transport Protocol is not designed to be speedy, despite
the use of the word News in its name. For example, your post got to me
via this path: newssvr21.news.prodigy.com newsdbm04.news.prodigy.com
newsdst01.news.prodigy.com newsmst01b.news.prodigy.com prodigy.com
newscon02.news.prodigy.com prodigy.net nntp1.roc.gblx.net nntp.gblx.net
nntp.gblx.net newsfeed.cs.utexas.edu news-peer1.sprintlink.net
news-rly-1.sprintlink.net news.cfu.net not-for-mail

If each of those links only delays the message a minute, it will still
take fifteen minutes for it to show up at my end. I've noticed that if
I post something from home using my news reader, or from work using
Google groups, it shows up in whichever I used within seconds. However,
if I post using one and then check using the other, it can take minutes
or even hours to show up, depending on how many other people are
currently posting multi-megabyte rolls of photos of their girlfriends.

Eventually, the messages do show up, however. I'd urge patience.

Actually they don't a lot of times. I've gone back to using Newsguy. The
difference is amazing. Hundreds of posts that I never saw on my ISP's
server.

What's odd is that in every other respect, I have a great ISP. If there's
a problem from their end, within the hour there's someone here working on
it.

They'd be doing themselves a favor if they picked up a different feed.

fwiw,
Mark
