View Full Version : Pink "Stuff"

I've been starting to see little "pink colorations" underneath the sand
against the glass and little pink specks on the surface of the sandbed.
What is this? Good? Bad? Neutral?
It started to appear about the same time as I got an urchin. But I
think that's just a coincidence.
Does that mean I should mix around the sand more often?
Someone on another board suggested it might be cyano bacteria and I
looked that up but didn't see any images that looked like what I'm
seeing.
Some Tank Info:
110 gal reef with 100 lbs LR and about four inches of live sand.
10 weeks old
Temp: 78
Ph: 8.3
Amonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 15
Specific Gravity 1.025

Don't mix around the sand, your tank is its own eco system, which the sand
is a part of.. mixing the sand screws with it. Leave it alone. If you have
live rock, it will produce several things just for the mere fact it's live
rock, one of which is a red/ pink discolorations on the sand. Don't worry
about it.
Cyno Algea is a red SLIM that is easily corrected. If you have Red Slime
Algea, you can correct it simply by going to your live fish store and
getting Chemi Clean. It's reef safe and fixes it overnight. IF you have
Cyno, you need to increase your water flow.
From what you said in your post, sounds to me like your tank is doing just
fine.

Craig,
1.Don't mix live sand. This defeats the purpose
2.Pink "stuff" between sand and glass is most likely algae and is OK
AFAIK
3.Cyanobacteria would not be "little".
The sand I'm using came with little pink specs, thus the name "... pink
sand". Yours might as well be the same...

I dont have any sand but I do have a base of dead coral particles - known
here as coral sand. I tend to get some brown algae on it so every week I
swirl through all of it sending particles everywhere - so far no problems in
about 2 years. All the small anenomes love it (they all come out fully in a
feeding spree) and my tank looks great afterwards....
