View Full Version : Painting back of tank?

Anyone done this?
I'd like to paint the *outside* of the rear pane.
Can I safely do this with the tank running? (I promise not to clean
the roller in the tank).

Flat latex OK? Or would a satin or semi-gloss be better.

What looks best- dark blue or black?
I currently have 4x96w diy pc lighting (2 10kk, 1 actinic, 1 7100k
'blue'- and BTW working on a cool LumuLeds LED night viewing light).

TIA

Some people paint a piece of acrylic (away from the tank) and once it is cured
and dry, put it on the back of the tank for a nice visual effect. I've seen
some amazing ideas on RC in this area, where it gave a look of infinity with
various blue hues.

I got a couple of cans of spray paint, one aqua, one forest green, one
darker blue. Varigated pattern on either glass or acrylic looks really
sharp. I did mine right on the glass and it turned out striking.
mask well the sides and top w/ newspaper, etc...dries rather quickly.
If I were using latex, I'd go with a sponge application and multiple
blue/green colors. JMHO

everything marc said and if you choose styrene instead of acrylic its cheaper, lighter,
easier to cut .....

and on top of that its opaque and white so you wont have to worry about getting enough
paint so you dont see thru it. and the lighter colors are easier to work with.

I wouldn't attempt a spray paint, but anything else is easy..

I've used both and honestly see no appreciable difference.

I've used dark blue and black at different times- both look fine although I
seem to want to clean the black more often..
I would probably attempt a dark blue to black fade if I were to do another-
I find those really stunning.

Thanks for the info.

What kind of "fade" are you suggesting? Like left to right? Or blue in
the center with a radial fade to black?

I had some old lead paint in the garage, must be as old as I am. It was all
separated but I was surprised to see how good it looked once I gave it a
good stirring (smelled though). I didn't have any brushes available so I
poured it directly into an old feed trough. I dipped the tank twice for
good coverage. I am almost finished scrapping the paint off the other three
pains with a razor blade. It really is quite easy and I would recommend
this method. This is going to be my SPS and invert tank :)

All mine have a piece of sheetmetal spray painted in the 'fade-to-black'
technique. Just slide them behind the tank and a bit of duct tape across
the top. Then it's an easy matter to change it if needed and the creep
and/or ant water will go over the tape and stay off the visible surfaces.
