View Full Version : Am i doing it right?

My girlfriend bought me a 100 litre tank for my birthday a few weeks ago. I
filled it with gravel a few fake plants and water and left the filter and
heater running for a few days.
I then went to my local fish shop and bought some small fish recommended by
them to cycle the tank.
All OK so far right.
Then.... My mother boyfriend turns up at my house after 2 days of the fish
being in the tank with a bag with about another 15 fish in it. They are
gourami's, 2 or three different kinds of mollies, a few red eyed tetra's (i
think thats what they are called), some tiger barbs, some sharks someting or
others (cant remember and i doubt they are real sharks).
So now i am doing a 20% water change every 2 days in an attempt to keep the
ammonia and nitrite levels down. Yesterday ammoina was somewhere between 1
and 1.5 ppm so i did a 40% water change.
Nitrite is about 1.0 ppm at the moment. they have all been in there 2 weeks
now and *seem* OK so far.
Is there anything else i should be doing?
Thanks Guys
Chris
p.s. I'm sure i'm going to enjoy this once i dont have to do water changes
every 2 days!!

I missed the tiger barbs. Return them. They'll nip your gouramis'
fins to bits.

I've seen many online messages claiming BioSpira does wonders cycling a
tank. It runs around $15 USA. Meanwhile keep up those partial water
changes.

Being in the UK, which I guess is where Christopher is from the address,
we can't get BioSpira - the only products available that I've seen are
Cycle and Waste Control of which I hear varying reports....might be
better than nothing though

Cycle is great. I set up my tank on a Friday with some live plants and a
brand new filter, the water was set for fish on Monday. Added six 1"
Piranha and haven't had a hitch.

It's only Friday. You haven't even had enough time to see an ammonia
spike. IME, Cycle helps establish ammonia-eating bacteria but is
useless for nitrite eating bacteria.

I think sean is talking about the distant past (i.e. what he did a long time
ago and now that tank has been thoroughly cycled for a long time). Good luck
and later!

It is US only. People here in Canada make runs to the border to
get it (then rave about the stuff. They sorta have to they spent
$60 in fuel to get it.)

Ok guys i know its bad form to reply to my own post but i cant reply to all
of you. I have taken the gouramis and tiger barbs back to the shop. The
two sharks are in a colleagues tank until i am ready for them. There are
now about 20 small (about 1" each including tails) fish which are all either
mollies, guppies or platties. The amonia in the tank has spiked at about 3
ppm and is now about 1.5.
Currently nitrite is around 0.4 ppm and still rising. i think i can see
this cycle thing happening :)
I am taking about half of the livebearers to a friends house who currently
has an empty quarantine tank tomorrow.
To top it all they have started with ich so i am going to have to trweat
both my tank and my mates quarantine tank for that. Once all the ich is
sorted and the cycle complete i will bring back the livebearers from the
friends quarantine tank. Then in a few mionths when all is settled i'll get
back the sharks from my colleagues.
Thanks for all the advice.
Chris.
