View Full Version : tiger barb with bizarre problems...

Hi,

I have a lone tiger barb that has two afflictions (don't know if
they're related):

* its anal area is incredibly swollen, and a bit of its internal tissue
is protruding out. It was white for a few days, and now it's darker
pink.

* it spits out these cottony bunches of "phlegm" that are white

Less active than it normally is, but not completely inactive.

We took it to a LFS and they said it was an "anal infection" and gave
us Kanacyn which seems to treat for everything (bacterial & fungal
infections). It says it is Kanamycin Sulfate.

We did the treatment for 5 days, and there is no real improvement. The
fish doesn't eat, but doesn't look as listless as you would expect.

We're not sure what to do....

Yes sounds like its constipated. Most likely an infection. That's why its
spitting stuff out because it can't go the other way LOL. Meds might work
but I doubt it. I would put it out of its misery IMO.

Sounds like intestinal parasites.

Yeah. You could try worming it with Fluke Tabs.

=============================
It doesn't sound good. My guess is either an internal infection or perhaps
intestinal parasites. Euthanasia may be the kindest thing in such a case.
This fish must be suffering.

=====================
I was thinking that as well. I opened one of these fish with similar
symptoms and spread the contents of their intestinal track on a slide.
There were some kind of parasites present but they weren't in any of my fish
disease books like the external parasites are. They reminded me of costia
but were larger and had only one tail as I recall. They were definitely
from the intestinal track and not the outside of the fish. I still don't
know what they were or if they were what caused the problem that killed the
fish.

I don't think Fluke Tabs are for internal parasites.
