View Full Version : What names do you give your fish - if any?

Someone recently posted that they have named their clean-up crew after
various vaccuum cleaning products.

Personally, I only really give my bettas names (currently have Boris the
red) and don't name the others...I was wondering if other people give
their fish names and if so what and why?

Hi Gill,

We have:

Julian - A Pink/Blue Betta, similar colours to a Julian Clary outfit
Douglas - A Flying Fox like Douglas Bader
Many Jaques - the Amano shrimp named after the shrimp in Nemo
Patch - a platy who got clobbered when young and now has a black patch
around his head
Mr & Mrs Rainbow - a pair of dwarf gouramis, sadly passed

Why do we name them? Well our youngsters like to know what they are called,
at their age it seems impossible to imagine a pet with no name (lots of pets
with the same name seems quite acceptable though!). Mind you, the enlessly
breeding platy that all look similar we seem to get away with.

Somehow some of my fish do end up with names. There's Snowflake the white
betta. There's Goldie the largest and deepest yellow koi we have. There's
daGhost, the large ghost koi. There's Bubbles, the first bubble-eye
goldfish I bought last year. There's BlueBoy, the fingerling I found
floating in the tank after a bad cold snap. He was put in the 2g tank in
the sunroom to pass in peace. He revived and is doing quite well.... so
yes, some of mine end up with names. :-)

'Batman' the large pleco who sailed through the water, and
'Orly' an alpha Frontosa who ruled the tank (named after Orly who was a
Usenet poster).
I also had an Oscar called 'Oscar', but that's not very original ;~).

For lack of confusion, all my fish are named Sue. Except for my red
clawed crab (my it rest in peace), it's name was "the crab" (a friend
of mine is nick named the crab, so the crab was named after him).

I wonder how he felt about that? A little boy buying a nice round fancy
goldfish who was ahead of me at PetsMart was telling the lady he was naming
the fish "Hurley." She said that was an odd name and asked him where he got
that name from. The child replied, "From the TV show LOST." I found that
kind of amusing....... ;-)

Mailed", "Kathy-II", "Årächñio", "Prominent Bethelite", "Mr. Paul",
"Gradyman", "Lupe Lu", et.al. ?

Hi, we have a orange and white Pearlscale called Nemo. 1 guess why :-)
My 2 year old has named the 4 goldfish. I would have liked to have
named one 'Nobby Clark the Dover Shark' after a gold fish I had as a
child but she names them instantly so i don't get a say. We have a
white ryukin called 'Mummy Coral' a calico fantail called 'daddy
Marlin' and a black moor called 'Rodney Copperbottom' from the movie
Robots. Seems quite appropriate as he has a gold hue around his rear
end. All our fish are like family members so its only fair they have
names really.

I have...

1 Betta: Dart

2 Otocinclus: Otto and Inky

5 Rasbora: Ras, Bo, Rah, Junior and John Doe

6 Neons: one is named Scout. I think I can tell which one, but I'm
not certain <g> I haven't named the others cuz I can't tell them
apart. I call them Neee-ons, oh Neee-ons (they usually come... if I
put food in the tank <g>).

5 Arched Corys - no names yet as I can't tell them apart, but I'm
thinking (if I do name them): Hoover, Kirby, Dyson, Oreck and Eureka

Why? Cuz it seems easier to get emotionally attached to them if they
have names, and what's the point of having pets if you're not
emotionally attached to them? It's also easier to talk about them
(One was chasing another one and then this other one joined the fun,
and... gets confusing <g>).

Liz

Did anyone watch Greg the Bunny? My slow, silly ryukin who's the last
one to figure out feeding time is named Tardy. "Crayons taste like

Let's see.... a few of these fish are deceased now, but..

My BP's - Jane and Spot; Nibblet and Spike (named after Buffy the Vampire
Slayer) LOL
The Geo's - Daryl and Daryl (anyone remember the Newhart Show??)
Firemouth - Iggy
Bala sharks - Rob and Bob (don't look at me, my husband named those..)
Gold Gourami - Stupidhead ('cause he was an ass)
Bettas - Sir Dingly Dang & Dr Heimlich (both named after comedy bits by
Eddie Izzard)
I don't name my cories because I have so many of them, but they're all
affectionatly refered to as the Kitty-Cats. And I haven't named my female
bettas.

As to why I name them... I think one of the other posters pretty much summed
it up - they're my pets, and pets should have names. :o)

Well... I've had a few fish over the years...

My first ever fish:
- Whitey and his bitch (Whitey was a white molly and his bitch was the
female orange molly I had with him - we called her that because she
chased him around the tank relentlessly)
- A bunch of fish in between that didn't really have names
- Oscar the oscar who died
- Ernie the oscar who died last year (I've had bad luck with oscars)
- Buzz the oscar who is currently still alive and seems very health
(crossed fingers) - of course now he's in a huge tank so he should live
provided I keep disease away from him. I'm planning on moving next
year, so I'll probably be posting questions on how to transport a
rather large fish in a car for 24 hours...

Buzz is the coolest oscar - when I bought him home, he only sulked for
10 minutes! I regret not calling him Squishy (from Finding Nemo) but
alas, he had been named Buzz for 2 weeks before I thought of squishy...

Oscars aren't my thing so this is not from my personal experience. I've
had friends lose them by introducing disease with those cheap feeder
goldfish and rosy reds. If these feeders aren't treated for parasites you
will surely end up with problems. And that's not even to mention internal
diseases and viruses. The feeders are almost always the sickest fish in the
stores. If you're using these feeder fish you may want to try to switch
your Oscar to something safer.

I think I need to branch out in my naming of fish. When I was little,
I always had goldfish named Bert and Ernie (grew up on Sesame St.). My
ancistrus has the longest... ummm... poop I have ever seen in a tank.
So I am thinking Baron Von Dingleberry (name of my friends hamster,
guess how it got the name). Maybe a more approprite name for my Angel
would be something like... Gabriel? I think because he is kind of ugly
and mean, Lucifer would be more appropriate. That leaves my hi-fin
black tetra (or whatever it really is), 3 green barbs and the red
finned black shark... any ideas?

I tried to name my brine shrimp last night... what a headache.

I have an Oscar named Oscar too, he was part of a team, Oscar and Felix, the
Odd Couple. But Oscar got the best of Felix, so I had to give Felix away
(very sad). All the rest just get called Fishey.

Have you heard of a certain famous lover named Dirk Digler? Well I had an
Aulonacara Eureka Red for years, he was my favorite fish and he spawned
hundreds and hundreds or fry, the ladies loved him.

The only problem though was all he was interested in was lovin the ladies..
he used to get chased around by the smallest of fish, and he spent almost
all his time in the top corner of the tank.

He was a pansy.

eventually he died after about 6 years.

a year later I have a new Eureka Red. He's only about 6 months old, so he's
just a bubba. I call him Dirk Junior or DJ. He's my cute little man :-)
