Im new to the Marine Aquarium world.. I have a 55gal cycling right now
with 45lb of live rock. I need to know when I need a protein skimmer
if I even need one. Also wondering about if I could get a design on a
sump, id love to house all my equipmnt there and keep my display tank
nice. Please give me a site with a SUMP DESIGN as well as the answer
to my questions. Thanks in advance!

If it gets messy with the live rock you may need a skimmer sooner than you
think as the Ammonia spike could kill off life-forms on the rock and warrant
skimming. If not, once you have cycled the tank and start to introduce fish
you might want to consider getting a skimmer then. It is possible to operate
entirely without a protein skimmer. The skimmer just makes it easier to
maintain the optimum tank water conditions.

get the skimmer now, most take a while before they are skimming good, plus you have to get
used to adjusting it. dont wait until you need one

Go to my site for a lot more sump information:
http://www.melevsreef.com

Yes, you want a skimmer now, a good one made by Aqua C, Euroreef or ASM (Euroreef knock-off).
For a 55g, I'd use the Aqua C Remora Pro (Hang On Back - HOB) or an Urchin Pro (in sump).

Ok... WOW arcrylic is expensive. Can I ask a local company that shapes
acrylic to make me one? The local aqarium shop also said I need a
Berlin skimmer thingy for my sump. Is this true, is there a
difference? Thanks in advance!

skip the berlin skimmer thingy :) they are not so great. as to you needing a protein
skimmer there are probibly 4 threads at anyone time on them. most any company that works
with acrylic will make one for you. but expect to pay $$$$ also being for a sump you can
often find cutoffs or scrap acrylic sold by the pound for much less $$$ consider it if you
are only building 1 sump for yourself.

Re: skimmers.... Euroreef or Aqua C is what I always recommend.

Sumps... you can build your own, and only be out the cost of materials, like Richard stated. You can also
use a glass aquarium, siliconing in glass dividers (from the local glass shop), to save some money.

Im going to get an over the back skimmer. Ive decided the AquaC Remora
Pro. Can I later put it in a sump? Im going to go with no sump for a
while. Ill probably add it later in the game. Is the AquaC good? Can I
add a sump later? THanks again!

Yes, you can put it in the sump later. The Remora Pro has a couple of teflon (or nylon) screws in the base,
which are used to help keep it level when resting against the back of the tank. The Urchin Pro just has a flat
base.

You may need to put something around the Remora to keep it steady in the sump, but that is relatively easy. You
could use a large Zip tie, or a coated wire hanger to act as a tether.

Or if you have a router with a laminate trimming bit (with a bearing), you can route off the two screw-brackets
and it will make the skimmer smooth on the bottom.
