View Full Version : EM tablets

I have recent outbreaks of red slime and GHA while my levels are all good,
ammonia = 0, Nitrites = 0, Nitrates <10. I would like to treat my 37G with
EM tablets to take care of the red slime and get a fish to eat the GHA. My
tank is FOWLR, lots of mushrooms, 3 clowns, 2 turbo snails, a bunch of
red/blue legged hermit crabs, sally lightfoot crabs, 2 sand sifting stars,
some smaller snails, and a 4-5" DSB.
I tried Slime Away on my 29G, (Zooanthids on one rock, LR, no DSB, all
levels the same as the above tank, 1 SL crab, 2 smaller snails and a couple
of sand sifting stars) it didn't do anything, the slime seemed to abate a
little but came right back. Made my protein skimmer go crazy.
Question:
Won't the EM tablets kill off my somewhat mature DSB ?
What would be a good fish to eat the GHA that won't keep the clowns from
spawning ?
Will anything eat the red slime ?
Thanks in Advance,
pb

You may have phosphate levels that are higher than .03ppm
What does EM stand for?
ChemiClean removed my slime algae with 48 hours.
You'll have to manually remove as much Green Hair Aglae as possible, then put
hungry snails on what is left for them and your hermits to consume.

EM is erythromycin, an antibiotic.
My snails are not eating the GHA they just hang out on the glass. I don't
think they are very hungry. My hermits seem to be "in the same boat."
I would love to get a new fish...isn't a lawnmower blenny good for GHA
control ? I figure once he has eaten all the GHA I would start clipping
nori to a magnetic clip.
Bad idea ?
I will check my phosphates also but a new fish would be cool too.
pb
ps. did the ChemiClean kick your PS into overdrive ? I had foam (white,
just water) pouring out so much I just ran the overflow for the PS back into
my sump until the action stopped.

Oh, I've heard of that. I just didn't know the initials.
When I say hungry snails, what I mean is that you need to buy some new ones from
the LFS. Those typically are voracious compared to the ones already in your
tank. Put them on your algae. Whenever they are off of it, along with your
own, put them back on the algae so they'll get rid of the stuff.
I bought a lawnmower blenny when I did have GHA, but within 7 days it
disappeared. I never saw it eat anything, algae or prepared foods. So I can't
say based on my own limiited experience with this fish.
When you run ChemiClean, you need to leave your skimmer off for 48 hours. When
you restart it after that period, you are supposed to do a 20% waterchange as
well, and even run carbon if necessary.
In my case, I just turned the skimmer back on, which filled up the large cup on
my Ev-200 in about 2 hours flat. I drained it and left town for a week. All
was well. :)

Thanks for the info, ChemiClean seems to have acted the same as the stuff I
used. Strange, though, my smaller tank that had the first red slime
outbreak was treated with the Slime Away stuff and the red slime seemed to
be receeding, then it came back. I think I am going to have to figure out
what else is going wrong. Red slime and GHA. I gotta get more reagents
(read fresher) and test my PO3.

What skimmer are you using, on what size tank, and how often are you cleaning
the collection cup and riser tube?
