View Full Version : carboplus: only one week

hi,

Since a month now, I've been using a carboplus installation in my 95gallon
tank.

It seems to run fine and plants really grow fast. One (major) problem
though: after one week of working (only during the days, but always at full
blast) the units gives a red light. This probably means the carbonplate
doesn't make a good contact to the connecting piece of metal. In fact after
two weeks the piece of metal was corroded so intensively, that it stopped
working completely.
Then, I changed it with a new metal, and after a week, the new metal also
fails to give enough contact to allow the unit to work at 100%. The unit
automatically turns itself down to approx 20 or 30 %.

What can causing this effect?

Could it be that the unit can't handle 100% over longer periods (although
one week isn't very long, is it?). If so, can I bring it back to the shop,
because this product doesn't work as it promisses to do?

thanx for all your advice!!!

I think this is probably your problem - I'm not sure a single Carbo-plus
unit is anywhere near enough for a tank of this size. Best suggestion I have
would be to sell it and buy a bottled gas system.

I'm gonna agree with that. The Carbo Plus is designed for 6-8 weeks on a
60 gallon-ish tank.

What is your natural KH?

thanx for your reply,

but I don not agree with you.
If a device like this wouldn't be suitable for a tank this big, than result
of that would be that the CO2 amount in the water doesn't get levels that
are high enough.

The result of a-too-big tank can't or shouldn't be that the device stops
working correctly! The device has a swith that allows one to chose a certain
voltage. Making this available to the end-user should mean that this setting
doesn't cause malfunctioning. A big tank implies chosing one of the highest
settings, but this may not lead to malfunctioning.

So my question: is my device not working properly , or: can't carboplus
units cope with this (although available!!) high setting?

Perhaps you could talk to the CarboPlus manufacture?

Teizman,

If the metal plate is not connected tightly to the medium then you're
going to create arcing between the two. Water is a great conductor and
the electricity will arc, without producing a visible jump.

When electricity jumps like this the amperage increases, with increased
amps comes higher temps and various forms of electrolytic action.
Basically, you're arc welding your connecting plate away.

As for running at 100%, I've never used this unit but would imagine that
it's not designed to work at that level for extended periods of time. I
would strongly recommend that you contact the manufacturer and inquire
further with them concerning proper operation of their unit in your tank
setup.
