View Full Version : unidentified critter...

I found a small creature ne'erbefore seen in my tank. Was hoping you might
be able to help me identify. Could not get a decent photo.

it is rather the shape of a tear drop and resembles a "sowbug" -- flat on
the bottom, rounded on top, with antennae out the front. It moved pretty
quickly along the bottom, I dislodged him from a clam that looked unhappy
this morning, and he ran for the rocks behind it. I can't tell if he has
legs or more of a slug-like bottom... forgive the girly description but if
you have any ideas, please help. Should I seek and destroy this critter or
let him be??

Space Aliens

Or perhaps Mysis Shrimp or Copepods. If these little critters, they are
great fresh food for the tank, and harmless. If it is the Aliens, check them
for work permits ;)

Sounds like some kind of Isopod. I don't have any specific links for you,
but a quick search should turn up some pics.

Sowbug = amphipod. Should be harmless

If you can get a close up look with a magnifying lens see if they have
legs sticking backwards. Kind of like a cricket with weird legs.
If so they are side swimmers. I have lots of them in my refugium.
You hardly ever see them in a tank because they make great fish food
and they know it. :) Great hiders. When I get a new seahorse I put
him in the refugium for a little while and they disappear till he's
gone. It's amazing. First time I saw one was in two clam shells that
came apart. I though for sure they had killed it. But just a hiding
place.

Yes could be the isopod - but I didn't think I saw legs, thought it was more
snail-like underneath - I turned him over but he moved pretty quick.

I was about 99 % sure it was an Isopod :-) , as you stated "Sowbug", which = Isopod. I
still wanted you to look.
