I have started web page for my tank if anyone is interested in looking at my
setup. I don't have all the sections complete, but do have some pics of
tank, corals and PLC-electrical.

Let me know what ya think of the setup and the page.

Ken, I love it. You do have some GHA to battle with, and you can find some help
for that in my website:
http://www.melevsreef.com/gha.html

The PLC is really cool. What did that cost? It looks like it is relatively
safe from getting wet, unless a pump shoots water straight upward.

Very nice and neat Ken, it always makes it easy to work on when things
are neat and clean.
Good Luck

Marc,

The GHA is getting better day by day. I hand harvest everyother day and move
some cleaners on it. I hope in another weeks time it will be gone, or it
should be at this rate. The PLC was purshaed off of EBAY for $200 with the
programming software. I do PLC programming as part of ny job so I knew the
software. The software is the key in getting as it can be expensive. Shoot
me an email if interested i may be able to help :).

Thanks Chis,

I like to have things tidy, and I built for expansion for later on.

Marc,

One other thing, I not sure if you noticed but there are acrylic panels
covering the PLC and Ballasts to protect them from even a straight up shot
ow water. With the way things go I didn't want to chance it.

Thanks for the offer. It sounds pretty nice, but over all it is really just a
super timer, wouldn't you say? Or have you found ways for it to do more than
turn certain outlets on and off?

Marc

That is what I was worried about. You know how things happen that you never
expect? ;)

Marc,

It's a little more than a super timer. Lets say you want an auto top off.
Pretty easy to hook up a float switch to run a pump untill the float switch
makes again. But if your switch sticks it could be a disaster. You can run a
second switch for protection. With the plc you can say if the float switch
says the sump is low fill untill the switch makes again, but if the pump
runs for a certain amonut of time turn it off even if the switch doesn't
make, and dont let the pump run again until a reset switch is pushed after
you found out what was wrong. The feeding timer is another great feature,
push a button and pumps go off for a predermined time, then automaticaly
start again. If I want to clean my skimmer, just double push a button and
the pump turns off to it. You could easily incorporate a wave maker into
also, or control just about anything depending on what you tell it to do
depending on external conditions. Its pretty cool, compact and not to much
more than a bunch of good light timers.

Thanks for the description. I forgot that I read about the feed timer you set
up, and didn't know about the float switch system. It sounds really nice. I
just read on Reef Central that there is a PLC on Ebay with 2 actuated valves for
$500. I'm not buying, but it is quite a coincidence to hear about a PLC in two
different locations on the same day!

Marc,

PLCs are everywhere in the industrial sector. You will find them running
most all machinery. Is the simplest explanation it is like having relays
that you can program with math, timing, comparing, and basic logic like if
this is not on, and this is on, then turn this on. Possibilites are endless
except for how many inputs and outputs the plc has. You can use these inputs
as much as you like in the program to control the outputs. They are really
cool, and it is hard for me to explain everything, but since I was familiar
with them and new the programming software, and the relitive low cost it was
a no brainer for me.

How do you go about programming it for the usage under a reef tank? Is it a
memory chip or USB plug-in, or do you hook up the PLC to your computer to create
the settings, and then move it back under the tank when it is ready?

It's an EEPROM in the PLC that holds the program. A PC is used to write the
program, downloaded to the plc thru a serial port on the PC, then pc can be
disconnected and PLC runs the program.
