View Full Version : FNG question. Sorta.

I have a friend that is looking to buy a sal****er aquarium (fish only). He
asked me questions 'cause I have a 29g fresh tank setup in my LR. Weelll,
to make a long story short, I've got the reef bug again. The last time I
had it I was in college. Please don't ask how long ago!
When did this refugium thing start happening?
WTF do they do exactly that a wet/dry/trickle filter doesn't? (I've looked
at the FAQ so don't flame me!)
I had some clients that had a 55g tank "reef-ready" with a plenum on the
bottom of the tank. Last I looked at reef setups, you weren't supposed to
have much gravel/sand on the bottom (1/4" maybe). How does a plenum differ
in function from the DSB I keep reading about?
Next stupid question: I have 4-5 aquariums at my parent's place in VA. I
live in San Diego now. Anyone have good luck shipping tanks cross country
without breaking them? Since I've got "extra" tanks/stands/filters/etc.
already, I don't fancy buying new ones... Mmmmmm....55gal reeeefffff.....
Thanks,
Mike

you know you had that one comming right :)

refugium's do a few things first they give the pods and such a safe place to breed and be
free, at least until they are delivered to your tank in which case they are lunch :) the
addition of macroalgae also allows your refugium to remove nitrates. and the extra water
volume helps create a more stable tank.

plenum's and dsb's also both help to remove nitrates from the tank, they are 2 different
ways of doing the same thing. the alternative no or a thin substraite does not remove
nitrate.

geesh I feel good when I can ship my tanks across my living room :)
ok so not that bad, but it sure feels like it sometimes. it should be doable you might
need to visit the folks to help get things packed correctly depending on how/who ships
them you may or may not need to box them yourself.

I'll answer, even though I don't wanna. I managed to graduate from VA Tech
in 93. Right after the big boom in reefs. Had a friend with more money
than sense who had a bitchin setup even back then.

I have been! That's one of the things that's pushing me back into the fold,
so to speak.
Just think: if I'd set up that reef back in the late 80s, I'd be the one
giving out advice. But Nooooo, didn't have any $$ back then.
