Anyone use one of these? I saw one at work and thought it was nifty because
it's just a powerhead with a micron filter in it! I thought it'd be
wonderful since I don't have a sump. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yes, I've had two of them under a tank, and they generated so much heat that the
previous owner bought a chiller just to cool the tank.
They are very good if you need to run carbon, nitrate sponge, phosphate sponge,
etc. They are good as an external vacuum cleaner, because you can suck out all
the crap off your LR or CC substrate, and pump cleaner water back into the tank
while you do it.
But I wouldn't use it as my main filtration because the micro filter pad will
load up and you'll have to clean it weekly to avoid nitrate issues.
Go with a sump if you can possibly do so. My site (linked below) has tons of
information on sumps.

When i first started out I ran a magnum 350 on my 75 gallon reef as my
main filtration, and that was it no powerheads no nothing. I used
Puri-gen by Seachem as my mechanical filtration. My tank did great, but
I was also doing 20 gallon water changes every two weeks. Now I use it
to run my 29 gallon with my lionfish. They are durable long lasting
little things.

I've been on your site before marc and I've been pondering on how someone
such as myself could get an overflow built like that one. I would LOVE a
sump, but space somewhat restricts it and without re-doing my stand it
wouldn't be of much benifit as I could probably only get a 5-10g sump. But I
would love one anyways.. with a refuge too...I'll have to measure my stand
and maybe custom build a sump to fit in with as much space as possible for
it..
Currently I only run a fluval 304, but as it is right now it's only a FOWLR
tank so it's alright. I only have 2 of the 4 sponges in place to catch a
few of the waterborn particles and it's basically just a powerhead. So far
it hasn't been a problem with nitrates..so far...
Thanks,
John.

Hi John,
I have provided all the information on my site to help others build their own
sumps and overflow boxes. I do build sumps for others, but shipping is always
high. The overflows I've decided not to build because they always need to be
tweaked to fit the specific tank and if I'm not there I can't help. Here are
the links:
weir:
http://www.sparklingfloorservice.com/tank/overflow.html
sump:
http://www.sparklingfloorservice.com/tank/design.html
and these are also full of good information:
http://www.melevsreef.com/what_sump.html - even a 10g sump would help your tank
not have surface scum and increase oxygenation.
http://www.melevsreef.com/make_a_sump.html - things to take into account while
planning.
If you end up wanting me to build the sump, just email me. I've got 5 projects
to do right now, so there would be a small wait.
