View Full Version : Clam in blastomussa, now what lighting?

Last month I purchased a good chunk of some beautiful blastomussa and after
the first two weeks it was loosing its color so I moved it to an area with
lower lighting. The color to the blastomussa is now back to a deep red.
This morning I was checking out the tank and I noticed amongst the
blastomussa a small 3/4" clam sticking through. I can't believe I never
noticed him before. But now I'm concerned about lighting. I am only
running about 200 watts of PC. I've been thinking about getting a MH, but
most of my corals only require low/moderate lighting. I know my current
lighting will not support a clam. Any advise? Should I get a 150W MH? If
I did, would my corals go into shock? Then there is the concern about the
blastomussa loosing it's color again? I've been wanting to get some corals
that require a MH, but I didn't want to mess with my current setup. I think
a new grey hair just grew on my head.

Brad, just keep using what you are using now. 200w of PC is pretty darn close
to 150w MH.
That little clam, what does it look like? Is it white and more like the shape
of a flame scallop shell? Some clams don't need light at all and just
filterfeed all the time. I have one very crazy looking one that I've been
wanting to get a picture of, but it is really inaccessible.
Let us know how your Blasto does. They are really pretty.

Thanks Marc. I'll stick with the PC for now. I've been reading about T5
lighting and how much more they put out vs. PC, but maybe I'll wait until
next year.
The clam has a white/grey colored mouth that is only partially open with
wavy shell edges. I just checked on him a few minutes ago and the
blastomussa has covered him up so now I can't even see him. I'm thinking
this might be why I've never noticed him before.
Blastomussa update to follow in a week or two.

If you could post a picture, that would be great.
