You have mentioned ABS material above - is it safe to use it for
plumbing reef or not? And the same with CPVC - it is ok, too?

cpvc is fine

abs is iffy, abs on its own is fine though from reading, and a tad bit of research it
seems some of the stuff used to mold abs drain pipes is not potable which would be BAD to
have in a fish tank. also most seem to have no trouble using the drain pipe. for me
considering the expense of all the lifestock Ill stay away from it at least until I can
find a 100% positive id of that which would be bad vs ok for use.

I am also not a plastics guru so maybee we can get our resident expert to voice his
opinion :) which I am sure we would both like :)

I just added abs as another plastic to compare to more so because it had slightly
different numbers, the chart I got the materials from lists tons of things from glass,
plastic pipes, metal pipes, even brick, cement and clay but .pvc and cpvc are listed as
identical.

fwiw...ABS becomes brittle after a while and may cause unwanted problems
like cracking etc

So does PVC :) Both have sensitivities to long term exposure to UV - esp down
in the 200 nm range which doesn't get through our atmosphere anyway.

Chemically speaking, ABS is fine. There are plenty of aquarium products made
from ABS including powerhead enclosures.
ABS piping is used in clean rooms, and there are ABS piping systems NSF rated
for potable water but are expensive.
BTW, as was previously pointed out, CPVC is fine too.
