Can someone explain why my Yellow Tank changes from a nice Yellow to a very
dark grey ro almost black ?, when it's dark in colour it seems to like to
hide behind a filter on one of the power heads, I was thinking it's either
scared or tired.
I have only seen it doing that in the past few days. I have had it now for
about 2 weeks or less.

The Yellow Tang is still changing from a nice Yellow to a dark colour, and
sometimes it's Yellow on the bottom and the top is near Black. Other times
it's Gray and shows no Yellow at all. It also likes to flick it's Dorsal Fin
out (fully extended) like as tho it's trying to scare off something (maybe
me ??). Some times it seems timid, other times it's trying to swim away from
you. But no matter what it's mood is or it's colour, when you put food in
the tank it's one of the first to go nuts eating food. It does seem to give
up quick on the eating after about 1-2 minutes then goes back into hiding.

Is it possible that your Tang is seeing its reflection in the glass and is
frightened?

If there is a reflection then it's only on the front glass. The rear and the
sides don't show any signs of reflecting anything, I have a plain blue print
attached to the glass and it seems to not reflect anything.

My tang loses color as well, but at night with the lights off. It usually
hides in the rocks and comes out in the morning looking grey with a white
stripe down the length of it's body. Once the lights are on, it goes back to
the normal brilliant yellow. It's out all the time and eats well. Might just
be blending in with the rocks to hide. Mine was timid for the 1st few days.

I will keep an eye on it, so far it's still the same, but not showing signs
of being sick, purhaps it's timid. It seems to get it;s colour back after
there hasn't been anyone walking past the tank.

I have noticed in my Tangs (Yellow and Scopus) that when they are sleeping
they change colors, become more drab.
I noticed this in other fish as well, puffers, manadrins...
