Very cool!
What kind of bulbs are you using (type, wattage, etc.) for what size
tank? Looks like a project that I' enjoy emulating for my little
setup!

Cheers!

Hi Vicky

The real credit goes to fabio. his webpage is here
http://www.kaotica.com/frag/diy/moonlight/

I did a few things different like the bulb. this is the one I used
http://www.lc-led.com/View.jsp?idProduct=94
they didn't offer this one when Fabio did his.
It has a little lower output but a more visible area. so with my smaller tank
I still used 5 led's
I also used shrink tube on everything and also lengthened the leads and changed the
configuration of the harness

The tank is 36x12x16

I did take pic's along the way. I f you want I can put them up.

Does it do that shimmering effect at all?

I also used Fabio's instructions, and it turned out fabulous!

My one suggestion, also echoed below: The LED's listed by Fabio had a
30 degree dispersion angle, which results in a little bit of a
"spotlight" look. If I were to do it again, I would also choose a few
of the 30's for spotlights on nice specimens, but also a few 60 degree
dispersion LED's for a more overall lighting effect.

I think were trying to compare apples to oranges here. If you mean the water looks like crystal ( that is the
only way I can express it) than no.
The idea as I understand the moon thing is to emulate night light and can't be compared to day light.
Ok , I'm not very good at putting things in words , but by shimmering I'm trying to say that I can see the
current in the tank, moving shadows, the movement of the water.
Thats about the best I can do as far a explanation as for what I see.

Yes, it is very difficult to explain and I doubt the Blue LEDs would be
intense enough to create that effect.

The effect I mean is the lines of light that dance around on the sand and LR
and stuff. Know what I mean?

I think I'm gonna have a go at this to, looks very good. I think i'm
gonna put a light sensor in there to turn them on when it gets dark...

Hi. I think that the lights that you want are the Moon-Lite by Custom
Sea Life. These do produce the shimmering effect! I just saw these at
a local tropical fish shop and the effect was awesome. These are not
blue-purple lights, these are bright white LED lights. I am going to
purchase two of these. I have seen them on EBAY- but I am going to
purchase them from my local tropical fish shop (to support them.) Here
is the eBay link if you want to look at the lights.

I guess that reef aquariums would benefit more from these lights.

Geez what a nasty past few days. but anyway I had been at the lfs
yesterday and was looking at his reef with the MH in it and I guess you
you could say yes they shimmer like the MH. I had never paid attn. before
but I stood there looking at the way the lights moved with the current and I would
have to say that the effect is the same just lower intensity and blue lights.
Some time in the next few weeks I'll try and borrow a digital camcorder(I don't think my
hi8 would look too good) and post a short mpeg of the tank with the lights on.

Hi,

I also did one using the same leds as Fabio did (500TB4D, 5,500+ mcd,
30 Deg viewing angle).
http://www.lc-led.com/View.jsp?idProduct=64

I used 6 blue and 9 red leds for my 3' 100g tank. The result is very impressive,
but if you want to simulate natural moonlight you should choose some
another solution. Theoretical calculations give, that the natural
moonlight illumination (0.5-0.8 lx) could be achieved using only one
such led at 20 feet distance! In reality the light cone seems to be
even twice narrower as expected by specification. So, using dimmer leds
with wider viewing angle would be the right choice.

Anyway, it seems that I got too bright illumination, my Caulastrea do not
expand tentacles when "moonlights" are on, even if the light cone doesn't
hit it directly.

But the red illumination is great! You'll find some pictures at
http://charon.assert.ee/aquarium/0312.htm
The text there is in Estonian though ;=)

During the day they will not be noticeable

Hey Mort. I posted a quicktime file in a.b.a
the qual. is not so great. It's off the wifes digital camera and the water is a little cloudy due
to cycling but you should be able to get an idea.
