View Full Version : Baby Clownfish

Hello all,
I hope it is warm, where ever you are.
I came home from work this evening and found a "patch" of clownfish eggs
on the back glass for my tank. My tank is FO, with many larger fish -
French Angel, Cowfish, Chainlink moray, squirrel fish, Austrailian Hawk,
Yellow tang, and a few others. the tank is 180gal. Anyone had any success
raising babies in a "community" tank? I do not see a way to move them or
even section off the tank. The French is 10" and really needs the space. I
have thought of moving some live rock to sorta box the eggs in and protect
them but am concerned that the parents placed them where they did to provide
current.
Suggestions? Or should I just think of this little orange wriggling
mass as breakfast for the others.
Thanks - Henry

where to begin, well breakfast it very much will be, there is just
about nothing you can do to raise these now, IF you want to raise the
next batch then you will need a collection of rotifers and other good
foods for babbies, they will also need to be in a seperate tank with
NO other fish even parents then you can raise the fry.

sorry the news was not what it sounded like you wanted to hear
sounds like an awesome tank though :)

They will all be breakfest unless you take them out as soon as they
hatch, and seperate them. If i'm not mistaken clownfish eggs hatch in 8
days. You will have to put them in something like a 20 gallon tank, and
feed them cultured rotifers. Since you have other fish you will need to
catch them as soon as the hatch. Let me know what happens.

it is the 8th day on most accounts, and they hatch at night. they are also
attracted to the light so you can turn off pumps and the night they hatch
use a bright light to attract them to the top of the tank and siphon them
out, don't use a net it will kill them.
sounds like a lot of trouble for a few clownfish, but to each his own :)

I have a pair of breeding black onyx clowns. After their first spawn, I placed
a tile in the location of their first spawn, and they have been spawning on the
tile ever since. (except for once). when the eggs are ready to hatch( 6-8 days)
the tile can be removed to a small hatching tank (3-10 gal). Then the fry will
need rotifers for the first 10 days (depending on species.. mine need 20ish
days of rotifers). then they can be weened to baby brine or cyclop-eeze. Most
clowns are not that dificult to raise. I highly recommend the Clownfish book,
by Joyce Wilkerson.

If we all didn't want to do a lot of things others would consider a lot of
work, we would all have cats instead of marine reef and fish tanks.
Thanks all for the advice. It sounds like this batch is going to be
dicey...I will try to collect even a few on the 8th night and see what
happens. As for next time, I am putting a clay pot in the corner of the
tank near where they laid this batch of eggs and will see what happens.
Thanks
