I have lost
Lemaon peel Angel
Then I purchased
Bi Color
They both have died. They both lasted exactly 2 weeks from me purchsing them
from different places.
55gallon
MH&VHO
CPR BAK BAK2R
2 Maxi Jet 1200 for Circulation
1 Powerhead 641 for Circulation
81 pounds of Live Rock
60 pounds of Live Sand
Blue Mushrooms doing great
Red Mushrooms doing great
Anemone doing great
Clown had him for 2 months
Fire Goby for a month
Star Sand Sifter
2 peppermint shrimp
8.0 ph
0 nitrite
5.0 nitrate
0 ammonia
I think they are starving to death I have tried Formula 1, mysis shrimp,
romain lettuce, dried sea weed, flakes, formula 1 angel formula. All the
other fish eat and live happily but in a matter of a month I have killed 2
angels and I am in the dumps for it I will not be buying anymore. But I need
some insight as to what possibly I can be doing wrong. I use RO/DI water
that goes into a 20 gallon pale brand new never been used for anything else.
It usually sits for about a week I only top off about once a week.
You can go to http://www.digitalrage.org/tank/ to see pictures of my current
tank.
Thank You

How are you acclimating them? What is your acclimation process?

What you are describing happens very often with Flame Angels. It could very
well be it has nothing to do with you or your tanks. It could be due to the
collection methods employed by divers, some of whom use cyanide to stun the fish
to ease capture.
If you buy a new Angel, put it in quarantine alone. Keep the water quality
stable, and feed it daily so it can learn what food you feed. Keep a piece of
PVC in there for it to seek shelter. After a few weeks, you can introduce it to
your main tank, after lights out.
If it feels secure, it will come out to feed now that it is accustomed to the
food.

Thank you Marc for the advise.
As for acclimation I take the bag and float it for 20 minutes to get the
temp right which is 78.6 according to my digital thermometer. After that 20
minutes I add a shot glass of water from my tank to the bag with the fish
every 15 minutes until the bag is full. Then I get the fish out with my net
and release him in the tank while flushing the water down the toilet this
usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes for this process.
Marc it is funny you mention this because I was just reading in Marine Fish
magazine that sodium cyanide is used for capture in the Philippines and
Indonesia, and the guy where I got the fish from tried to treat me as a
newbie and tell me how exoctic this fish was and that it came all the way
from Indonesia, so now instead of in the dumps I am about to be ****ed.

Just to add my two cents worth, I too haven't had very good luck with pygmy
angels, especially the Flame although that is my favorite. What I have
started to do with any fish purchase is to ask to see it feed at the store.
If it is a reputable store, they will be more than happy to drop some food
in the tank so you can watch to see if it feeds. If it does, take note of
what they are feeding it. If it doesn't, pass on it even if it is one of
your favorite fish. There will be others to come.

You could also offer the dealer a deposit and let him keep the fish for a
couple of weeks before you take it home.

Maybe they were caught with cyanide!
