View Full Version : Help! Sick Anemone?

Mort
January 27th 04, 05:06 AM
I've had a sebae anemone for a couple of months now. When I first got it,
it hunted around for a suitable spot for a day or two. Once it wedged
itself between a couple of rocks it stayed there.

Today, when I first turned the lights on, it was all "balled" up. It
basically retracted in to itself. Only a few tentacle coud be seen through
a small gap that it had not covered itself wiith. Once the lights came on,
it came out a little bit but has since retracted again and is now
"deflating".

I have been feeding it silver sides once a week. I just fed it a few days
ago (last friday). Parameters are stable although not optimal. I have
260watts of PC. 2-10000K and 2-True .03 Actinic.

Parameters are...

Ca 525ppm
Alk 7.4dKH or 2.63meq/L
pH 8.1
Amonnia 0
Nitrite 0
NitrAte 10ppm
Sg 1.027 (I'm making RO/DI water now for a top oof, I usually keep it at
1.026)

Any ideas what could be wrong?

TIA

How long has it been like this. Anemone do this occasionally to purge
themselves and then return to normal.

Thanks Chris. I think you're right on the money. Today, it looks as happy
as ever =)

Well, I may have spoken too soon.

This morning it was fine, but today when I got home from work, it was all
deflated. The "mouth" was slightly open and you can see some white slime
oozing out. NOT smoke, but a slime. Kinda looks like "snot" (sorry to be
vulgar) and it is stringing along by a few inches.

To make things more interesting, I was at the LFS today and saw a nice
looking maroon clown hosting in a bubble tip. I thought about it, discussed
it with the owner, and bought them.

Whatever is wrong with my sebae, will it effect the bubble tip?
I'd rather not add anything at this time but, I dont have much of a choice.

The bags are flaoting right now... HELP???

Here are my reading as of a few minutes ago...

Sg 1.026
Ca 550ppm
Mg 1500ppm
Alk 8.0/2.86meq/L
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10
pH 8.2 11:30pm
temp 78 degrees F
Ammonia appears to be .25
I'm not too conviced as the reading is between 0 and .25

I need to get a Salifert for this but it does appear to be above zero!

All fish are accounted for. The only thing that has changed recently is I
started feeding my tank some plankton that I grew myself. Maybe this batch
went bad? What do you guys think?

the ammonia might be from a decomposing seabea anemone.

Hi

Its worrying that your ammonia level's may not be at 0. This is either the
cause of the anemone's need to keep purging (trying to 'unpollute' itself),
or the anemone is dying and creating ammonia in the water. This isn't a good
time to introduce new stock, no matter which way you look at it.

The slime coming from the Anemone's mouth isn't uncommon, and happens to
mine once every week or two, in fact the 'mouth' also doubles up as its anus
and that is precisely where it defacates from. This is possibly what you're
seeing.

Thanks Chris, I wasnt aware that "slime" was not uncommon.

I'm gonna try to get a salifert kit for the ammonia from an LFS today.
This AM the Ammonia registers a little lower but still not zero.

The sebae looks beautiful this morning and the BTA is missing.
I'm sure it's behind a rock or something...

Hi Mort,
I'm not saying that your low temps are causing problems with your sebae(because
Sebaes are difficult to keep alive at any temp).
but have a look at this article..

Good luck

Ime, absolute zero ammonia isn't quite possible. Everything is always peeing in
the water, and it is slightly up from zero no matter what.

I believe the Salifert kit starts at .25ppm, but I may have it mixed up with
another kit.

I found the BTA... It had a disagreement with my powerhead. The powerhead
won =(

I have the inlet strainer on it but it got suck through the fine veins
anyway.

What a bummer! $30 down the drain.

I'd say about 25% of it was still OUTside the strainer. The rest was pulled
through the strainer. It did NOT get chopped up by the impeller.

I had its remains and the strainer in a plastic baggie all day. As of a few
moments ago, it does not stink.

Do you think the BTA is still alive?

What should I do?

Man, I've got no idea. Odds are it didn't do well.

Mort, it isn't about the $30, it's about the anemone! You can turn it loose in
your tank again if you think it may be alive still. You can always pull (or
siphon) it out if it takes a major turn for the worse.

You're right Marc. I am more bummed about the BTA than the money.
If it does die, I paid $30 for a good lesson right? Poor thing...

Well, I decided to put it back in the tank last night and it did partially
attach to a rock so it is alive. However, as of this AM it is missing. I
did a water change last night and decided to test my "new" water for ammonia
for comparison on my test kit. I got the same stinking reading from the new
water that I did from my tank. I think this test kit is going in the
garbage =)

12 hours later and still no sign of the BTA. Eaten by the emeralds maybe?

I have more questions about this scenario but I think it's time to do a new
thread...

Found it!

It is actually hanging UPSIDEDOWN on the back of one of my rocks.
Is that normal?

Yes. It will reveal itself when it is ready. Right now it is nursing a tender
tushie! (from the powerhead incident).
