I took a few pics of my tank today. It was established approximately 6
months ago and things seem to be going very well. The pics are available via
the link below.

Nice pics! What size is your tank? It appears to be same as mine, 29
gallons. Mine is also 6 months old.

It's a 35 gallon, but I believe those extra 6 gallons are a result of
height. The tank is 18 1/2" tall. I've got 3 Maxi-Jet 1200s on it for
circulation, with another Maxi-Jet as the pump for the Remora skimmer
(thanks for tips Marc, it's all working great). The lighting is 4x55 power
compacts. I also built my own moon light with a very bright blue LED and use
it whenever I remember to turn it on. Everything else is on timers.

Your tank looks awesome! Very nicely populated. The ident chart is very
helpful too.

BTW, off topic, but as you keep fresh water too: the German Blue Rams in my
fresh water tank laid eggs this morning. :)

Regards,

David.

Pics look great, what do you attribute all of your coralline to?

Thanks! I attribute the coralline to luck, mostly. I started off the tank
with some okay live rock, and doubled up to about 60lbs worth a couple of
weeks later after finding a much better LFS. The second batch of live rock
was excellent quality, and well-encrusted with coralline. After adding some
livestock the tank had an algae bloom. There was lots of green hair algae
growing on the sand and the rock. The odd part is that nitrates at this time
were 0, as was inorganic phosphate. I pulled a couple of the worst rocks out
and scrubbed the algae off with a wire brush. I also added more blue leg
hermits to the tank. At that point the tank seemed to be overrun with live
rock critters. At night, watching with a flash light, the sand bed was
literally crawling with them - and they seemed to be eating the algae too.
Finally, the algae started to disappear and in a matter of days it was all
gone. The population of critters seemed to die back as well. At about that
time, the coralline started appearing on the glass. I keep a weekly check on
the calcium level in the tank and use Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium as a buffer
and supplement. I try to keep the calcium at about 450. I use mostly treated
tap water for top ups and water changes, only rarely using distilled water
from the grocery stillt. The tap water here seems to be very good with a
decent buffering capacity by itself.

The only trouble I have now is with the odd bloom of red cyano. It pops up
in small amounts on the sand bed and disappears again a few days later. I
haven't been able to correlate its appearance/disapperance to anything I'm
doing (or not doing) to the tank. In the pic of the maxima clam on my site,
you can see a patch of red cyano in the background.

Regards,

David.

Very nice David. What is the bright green coral with multiple heads?

Ruth, that page loads much faster now. And I really like how you ID'd each
creature in the secondary picture.

Marc :)

Thank you, Marc. Actually, you could say that looking in a mirror
because all I did was follow your advice. :>] I shrank the thumbnails
and justified the text, then looked at a few of my other pages and made
some changes that were Marcedly better. Yes, that was a pun.

Hi Marc,

It's alveopora. The colour change between the LFS and home was a bit of a
disappointment. The coral was yellow at the LFS, but it shows up as green
under my own lighting. :(

Regards,

Dave.

Well, it's just gorgeous! I knew it wasn't a goni.
