View Full Version : Leather Coral (Elephant Ear) Problem - Help!

A leather coral that's been happy in the tank for some months now has
decided not to extend its tentacles for three days. Everything else in the
tank seems happy, Pulse Coral (Xenia) is flourishing and the anenome has
never looked happier. The rest of the corals appear normal.
Has anyone experienced similar issues with the Leather coral, is it likely
to get better, or is it dying? (isn't decaying).
Thanks in advance
Chris

IME leather corals just have a sulk every now and again.. last time mine
sulked it was for about a week then back fully extended again as right as rain..
all tests were fine and a water change achieved nothing.. keep an eye on it
but my bet is it'll be back open again within the week :)

leathers shed, they close for a few days and shed the outer layer of skin
off in a slime form. if they do this and don't have good flow over them it
can kill them. yours opened on its own, which is a good thing, but in the
future keep an eye on it and blow it off with a turkey baster a few times a
day and it will come out quicker.
this is how they grow.

Its funny you mention it, the leather coral opened up on the same day that I
upgraded water flow.
I'll bear the turkey baster in mind for next time.
Thanks
