View Full Version : Harbor Aquatics VS Reefer Madness

February 3rd 04, 12:00 AM
I had been planning a trip to Harbor this weekend to get 20-25 lbs of rock(4.50lb=$112+tax)
and a bunch of snails. 2-2.5 hrs each way (with good weather)+ tolls.
The wife was going through my links trying to learn more and came up with Reefer.
45lbs $143 2nd air, $159 overnight.

Now here is my dilemma
With reefer
the existing rock in my tank would have to be taken out not a big deal but a waste and
back into storage

I'd have to cure it. ( prob. in the tank I could set up the 55or 75 but rather not)

Have no clue what I'd be getting.

How long has has the rock been sitting in a box

I'd have to order snails later.

Ok we see the way I'm leaning.

Harbor

I pick my own rock & snails right there

downside
All day field trip

add with gas prices prob.@ $1.80 a gal= $30-40 + tolls+ tax (on rock)

$4.50lb

30gal (12x16x36) up for around a month,96w50/50 ,1 yellow tail damsal, remora skimmer, 50lbs sand
Geeze, after 12 yrs together she finally takes an intrest and since this is a family project I have to at
least have to hear her out. so any thoughts on both would be appreciated.
Thanks

Reefer Madness gets their rock from Walt Smith. they used to drop ship it
but now that they moved to LA they most likely ship it directly themselves.
I have ordered corals from them a few times and have never had a complaint,
they are one of the only online places that I was 110% satisfied with my
orders.

Instead of harbor there are a couple places very close to there, Pet Haven is a
couple miles down the road from them and has a pretty good selection of live
rock and a nice selection of corals. In hobart about 10 miles away is
Aquascapes, they dont always have a lot of live rock but they do have pretty
good prices on their corals. I have been to harbor a couple of times and have
yet to see why they are known for live rock or corals. I do most of my shopping
at aquascapes and Pet haven they are not the best in the chicago land area but
they are pretty good

I have to agree. I bought one large order or LR from Harbor and it was nice.
The next time I went back I forgot about the time difference and even though
I had e-mailed ahead was sent away because I was an hour early. In killing
some time I ended up stumbling across Pet Haven. I was totally amazed at
everything they have in their basement. I spend $200.00 there instead of
Harbor that day. A third time I happened to be going past Harbor, after I
left Pet Haven, and thought I would drop in to pick up some snails. She
wasn't happy that I was there unannounced on their day off (my bad) I did
get my snails however I didn't notice much LR in their tanks at that time,
(about two months ago). It is also about a two hour trip for me.

I have only ordered from Harbor once. I ordered a small amount and they
encourage people to order a small sample to see what they are getting, so
it might have been cherry picked.

Still, but it was the best live rock I have seen so far.

I ordered from Harbor...couldn't be more satisfied. Never seen rock with
more color and life..very satisfied. I ordered cured rock. After figuring
cost and risk of curing on my own, I decided against it. I'm very happy with
purchase. Rock has tremendous amount of life popping out all the time...
