View Full Version : Can I add to my DSB??

I am having a problem with cyno and one of the things that was suggested was
increasing currant flow. The problem with that is when I run more current
over the sand it ends up digging holes. I have been told by my LFS that the
sand will get heavier as time goes on but it has been around 6 months
already. My question is this, I have some left over medium crushed coral
from the FOWLR I am setting up and I am wondering if I can add a little to
my DSB in the reef tank to help keep the sand down as I increase the currant
flow. Currently (pun kinda intended) I have a mix of very fine and sugar
sized carib sand.

Sure you could. Just set a layer on top of the finer stuff.

Yes, just put a little bit on the surface. I had a spot that was constantly
blown out by my Tunze Turbelle. One day a guy gave me a few pounds of his LS to
replenish all that I'd given away to new reefers. It has some CC mixed in, and
when I poured it into that pit, it stayed!

So I don't have to worry about the cyno getting under the CC and continuing
to multiply then?

I would siphon off all the cyano you can see with airline tubing. Then put down
your CC on the surface to prevent the sand from blowing around. Increase your
current, and keep an eye on things. You may need a few more clean up crew
critters to help keep things clean and healthy.
