View Full Version : MH every two feet??

I saw Marc say in a post that you should have a MH every two feet. If I had
one over my 30" tank in the middle would that be ok or if I put it off to
one side maybe so I can keep some softies in the darker area? OR what if I
built the reflector to cover the full 30" length would that make up for the
extra 6 inches.

its not an exact thing. its just a close estimate that generally works. ive ran 1 and 2
bulbs over a 37T which is 30" wide both have worked well. what will make the difference is
height and wattage of the bulb.

So is height generally decided by heat then? The closer the better without
getting to hot? I am looking at a single 250 watt.for 30" long 30 gallon
which is about 14 inches from surface to the top of the dsb.

should have qualified that height as in height of the tank.
a 250w MH will be sweet. a 175 will work

I really think a single 175w bulb would do just fine over a 30g. They just
aren't that deep to the substrate.

Would the 250w be bad? The one I am looking at comes with a 250w bulb
(ebay). I don't want to burn anything. The depth is 19" from top to bottom
with a 4-4.5 DSB.

no i have used a 250 and a 400 on my 37T, but its overkill and costs more for less
benifit.
some softies will be burned by a 400 on a small tank like that, but after some aclimation
most will be ok. and what wont be ok in direct light can be shaded
you can also keep the bulb higher off the water and not get as hot from it, though I keep
my bulbs close, ive only had 1 problem with water on the bulb once, and height wasnt the
problem dumb owner syndrom kicked into overdrive that time.

Just consider that you are paying to light that bulb 10 to 12 hours a day, vs a
175w. I just don't believe you need it.
Then again, if you upgrade to a 55g later, you can just buy one more matching
setup. I have dual 175w over my 55g and I feel it is more the enough.

What about regular 29 gallon 36" long?
Will one 175W be sufficient?

a regular 29g is only 30" long and a single 250w does wonderfully on mine.

I have to check then what I have in my home...
Mine is 36" for sure, I use two 96W/36" power compacts currently.
