View Full Version : Calcium reactor considerations

Hello all,
I have never kept any hard corals before and as such have never felt
the need to keep a calcium reactor. I am now considering going this
route and was hoping to get some advise. I have seen several different
generic recommendations by many of you by searching google but I was
hoping that if I narrowed down the criteria of what it is I wan that I
could get a more well sounded recommendation.
The reactor will be for a 75gasllon tank and I have no desire to have a
larger tank ever as far as I can see. I sold my 125 gallon to buy the
75. That being the case little is OK and it does not have to be able to
grow with the system as the system won't be growing. Also I am looking
for something that is easy to use and won't kill my tank if I screw up
a little. Finally if it requires tons of maintenance I would rather
dose kalk than mess with it so basically I am looking for a smallish
device that is easy to use and has trouble free maintenance.
So does such a beast exist? I look forward to your responses and TIA.

No one has any advice for me on this? The LFS told me (here we go...)
that there is no reason to have one because if I have a deep sand bed
(4 inches plus) it will dissolve on it's in in about six months and
release all the calcium I need. That was news to me so I thought I'de
pop in here. Anyone?....anyone?....anyone?...

Your LFS is right in the sence that you dont _need_ a CA reactor, but _WAY_ off
track when they say your sandbed will disolve and provide calcium.. If you sand
bed disolves enough to provide calcium, your pH would be so low that no calcium
loving corals would survive anyway. If you really want A calcium reactor, I
would look into a GEO at www.geosreef.com.

Ah thanks, I actually just emailed him yesterday as his reactor does
not seem to be available anywhere. Any idea on how well his skimmers
work?

Because it makes things difficult to understand.
Why shouldn't I top post?

His skimmers look almost exactly like a EuroReef to me. So it should work just
fine.
