Sump location

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to putting the sump at the same water
level as the main tank?

Or is below just customary?

if its at the same height then overflows dont work as well, it also takes up more space,
the advantages are even a lower GPH pump will move more water due to less head, and you
dont need that much of a difference to make the overflows work again.
