maybe :)
A power head is submersed in the water, usually inside the display tank to
increase circulation.
A pump could refer to this, but usually means the pump that runs your filter
or returns water to your display from the sump (submersed or external) and
has a high GPH.

If I have followed the "hobby" correctly, the original function of a "power
head" was to replace the little airstone in the old undergravel filters.
They sat atop the uplift tubes and pulled water up much better than bubbles,
obviously, being a water pump.
"Aquarium pump" would be a very general term, a power head could be
considered an aquarium pump. Alas, so could my Rena100 air pump, amd those
fancy Iwaki Mag drive water pumps (that I wish I could afford one of). Hope
this helps a bit.

Same concept, but different, get it? <bg>

Power-head and Water-Pump basically the same. Actually do the same job.
Powerhead normally in a tank where it can be submerse and *normally* do not
put outside of tank. There are exception. Powerhead have a input tube and
maybe another tube for output but may just have a flat spout instead [like a
duck beak].
Water pump can be both inside or outside of the tank, depending on the
design. It main purpose is to push water. It have input and output tube
where you attach thing like a PVC or hose ..etc... Some brand / model will
have extra accessories for you to attach to make your Waterpump to be like a
PowerHead.
Do you get the idea?
Take a SUV for example. It somewhat a car but also a truck.

Heehe..... Normally a water pump have stronger push than a PowerHead. Both
Powerhead and WaterPump can be place on the Upleft tube. WaterPump will
cause stronger current than a PowerHead.
Both have the basic principle.

Boy, Dinky,
I was hoping all your posts would be as controversial as the one that
started the infamous 'Alkilinity' thread. :)
(maybe you could have said something like: I heard RIOs are the best
pumps around).

Sorry to barge in on the thread, but if you want to hear about my RIO
experience, check out my thread called 'Talk about Stray
Electricity...'
