Yes, you guessed it, Leaks. My 75 all-glass is leaking. Slowly. Seeping
up from beneath the bottom trim. It's been full for two weeks, just noticed,
apparently it's been seeping for several days. I'm going to lose all my live
sand, I have no place to put it while I tear down the tank and transport it
back to the LFS and resist the temptaion to throw a hissy fit in the middle
of the store. Not to mention 30 bucks worth of salt, and a ****load of work
and time invested, and another month-long setback.
-- I'm just pi$$ed.
--I'll get over it.
--But not right now.

I would advise that you try to determine the cause of the leak before you
end up going through the whole proccess again....
Was it a new tank or used?
What sort of stand was it on?
Was the tank and stand level?
Is it on a wooden floor?
Does/did it shake when people walk across the room?

I already determined it, just a few minutes after the post. I don't know how
I did it, I've set up a dozen large tanks, and never forgot it before, but I
forgot the foam underneath it. I don't know how I forgot, but I did. Dumb,
dumb, dumb.

I don't think that is the cause, I have never use any foam under a glass
tank and have never had a leak.

Right, the lfs's in this town no longer advise the use of foam under a tank,

My sincere sympathies!
I have a foam-related question... I am setting up an 80g with a center
brace on the bottom. This lifts the bottom off the stand about 3/8". Is th
foam there to aid in supporting the bottom class or to compensate for any
high points in Plywood? My stands are topped with MDF and have a sheetmetal
cap to protect the MDF from water, therefore they are absolutely flat,
smooth and level.
It seems like the bottom will be getting about 200lb of LR and LS as well as
the weight of the water and, to me, the supprot of the foam wouldn't hurt.
Any thoughts/experiences?
Thanks

the glass is plenty strong enough to hold the weight of anything you can put
it in as long as its not slammed down and even then its quite difficult to
break the glass.
I was unfortunate to bust an all tempered glass 55g a few weeks back. I
didn't want to replace the glass so I decided to just throw the entire tank
away so that left me with 3 more sides and a bottom to shatter.
first I tried ole faithful, a spring loaded center punch. it will shatter
the safety glass on a car with just a quick click. (learned that trick from
a car thief) well it didn't work on the tempered glass, might be because
its thicker who knows......
then I used a hammer (eye protection used here guys) and thought no biggie,
just a quick hit and presto......well needless to say I smacked hell out of
the dang thing and it wouldn't bust for nothing. to break it, it took one
heck of a hard swing with the hammer cocked so it struck the glass with the
side of the head for a smaller impact area as opposed to the flat of the
head.
on the last side I figured I might as well enjoy this fun as much as I can
so I got out the old diamond hole saw. I've heard all the stories but
wanted to give it a try firsthand and see for myself what it would actually
do. it drills very nicely, half way, then it shatters into a gazillion
pieces.

Odd. I always took for granted it was needed. Learn something new every

I cut my foam to fit inside the trim under my 110 African Cichlid tank. The
motivation for this was/is the constant excavation. The thought of 150 lbs
of rock dropping scared the bejeebers outta me. 110 gal on the 2nd floor
could really mess up the 1st.

The foam is on the inside?

on an acrylic tank I do believe it is required to prevent pressure points
that cause cracks.

Got it empty and dried out, and I can't for the life of me find anything but
pristine silicone on all joints. Thinking of slathering on some silicone
anyway, and hope for the best.
