I have [or had] a red star about 5 inches across, that actively roamed
around the tank. Its been gone for a week now.

Do I need to tear the 34 gal. tank apart and find the star in case it
is dead and rotting, or just wait? I tested for ammonia to see if it
was rotting, and it was OK. Everything looks good in there.

Thanks.

AFAIK, most starts like to bury themselves in the sand.

Do you have a DSB or crushed coral? Something else?

Do you have a clean up crew? (various crabs?)

My sand ranges from 0 to 3 inches. Yes, I have hermit crabs and snails.
