Can anyone help? I have a 50 gall tank and expieriencing high nitrate
levels which I am managing to lower by water changes every 3 days
which is bugging me. how can I reduce the nitrate thus reducing the
water changes, Amonia 0 Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20-40ppm, PH 8.2.

Darren,
Is the Rena an external filter? If so you may be doing a great job of
converting all your ammonia and nitrite to nitrate there, it is not like
deep sand bed or live rock which will take things a step farther and
work on the nitrate.
I had bio balls in my overflow to quiet and crushed coral for substrate
and removed both to help my nitrate problems.

Any foam pads will become Nitrate factories unless rinsed very often.
If you can add a refugium with Macro Algae your nitrates will be nearly
eliminated.

I have several smallish tanks that I'd like to turn one of into a refugium
under the tank next to the sump once the tank is up and running. Can you
point me to, of give me some info on cultivation of the proper algae?

From what I understand, the cultivation is simple. Leave the light on 24/7
and the stuff grows more than you'd like it too.
As far as recommendations as to which algaes go, I'll let someone else
comment as I havent gotten that far w/ my research yet. ;)

If you are allowed to get it, Caulerpa is quite easy. Myself, I've converted
from that to Cheatomorpha and am very satisfied.

Without knowing the details of your system:
(1) Initial water source, RO/DI water + salt mixture
(2) Food chain, type and quantity of food sources
(3) Chemical sponges, rotation of filter media
(4) Gas exchange, Skimmer
(5) Water circulation, decaying organic "stuff" hidden in the tank
What goes into the system will remain until removed.
