If I buy sanitized play sand from Home Depot and use live rock, after a
period of time (say 6 months), will I have live sand?

Thanks

Theoretically, that has worked for many of us (myself included) but you want
to make sure you get the right kind of sand for many reasons.

Do a google on Southdown Tropical Playsand and you should find all the info
you need.

This is the only sand that I know of to work for our reef needs. (Not saying
there aren't others but this is the most popular)

I used about 3 inches of aquarium sand (non-live) with another inch of live
sand on top when I set up my tank. I'd call all of it live sand now, 7
months later. I'd check to make sure that the sand from Home Depot is
suitable for use in a reef aquarium before trying it though.

Regards,

Dave.

The bagged sand I've seen at HD (I've used it in FW aquariums) seems to be
crushed rock, little silicates. Grey, though..wouldn't look right in a
marine tank, IMO.

They carry a couple different kinds, I've been looking there for the
southdown, but all they have around my location is for paving or the
silicate sand for sandboxes. I'm not looking too hard though, I'll be going
overseas shortly.

Don't use Contractor Sand, it will kill your livestock in less than a week. It
was golden-brown, last I saw it.
