View Full Version : grocery store RO water?

The local supermarket has a large machine at which one can purchase water.
Reading all the fine print, it claims to be;
carbon filtered
UV treated (2x)
RO

At 30 cents a gallon, it'd be a steal, with the added benefit that I can mix
the water to my preferred SG, using the aquarium salt of my choice, unlike
the SINGLE LFS in town that provides ONLY premixed RO water for about 7.50
for a 5 gal bottle, plus deposit on the bottle.

Any comments on this plan? I plan to aquire a gallon of it, and test the
ever-loving crap out of it no matter.

What kind of water do you have coming in to your house billy?

You can pick up a decent 100gdp 5 stage RO/DI for $150

Decent. No ammonia, low nitrates, ph about 7.3 out of the tap, drops after
sitting.

Hi Dinky

You can get a DI only filter which produces .05 to .06 microsiemen
water for around 20 bucks.
They can be recharged for under one dollar!

If you buy the resins separate, spaghetti cannisters works quite well
to make your own large DI system.

To answer your question Dinky, quality is going to be on a machine by
machine basis. If you are able to locate a machine that produces the quality
of water you are looking for, you'll probably be alright with it's use. Look
for machines that are kept in good condition and the "serviced" sticker is
upto date. Chances are greater that if the machine is kept in good condition
the water coming out of it will be also. However, there's always a measure
of risk involved. I kept a reef for more then 3 years using nothing but
"vending machine" water and had very good success doing so. Maybe I'm just
lucky though.
