View Full Version : Where is everybody getting there salt?

February 17th 04, 02:27 AM
Now this is not a debate on which salt to use, just where you get it and the cost.
I use IO and had about 1/3 of a bucket still good, but i'm out.
The wife went to one of the large chains today to get more for me but they wanted $75.
Thats nuts. I paid $34 for my last bucket. prices could not have gone up that much in the past
couple years. Could they?
I did find that http://www.petsolutions.com/ has 200gal buckets for $35 and $14 shipping.
So If anybody knows of a better website or a store around the WI/IL boarder let me know.
I'm already screwed and am going to have to pick up a bag to get me through for now.
Thanks

I get the Coralife salt from Petsmart. They sell the bucket for $42. That
is the best price I have found locally in Chicago.

Is their bucket for 150 gallons only? If you do the math then it
would make the price for 200 gallons of Coralife about 1.33*42=$56
compared to 200 gallons of Instant Ocean for only $49...
If this 7 bucks makes any difference, Istant Ocean would be cheaper.

Just bought a 200g bucket of IO from PetsMart for $54 here in town. The
LFSs in Phoenix (85 miles away) averaged $75.

We had quite a discussion a few months ago about this. At the time
Petsmart had a coupon that made it much cheaper to buy IO salt on
line.

I took advantage and bought two buckets at a very reasonable price.
Shortly after that they added a $16 surcharge per bucket that took it
way out of an acceptable price.

I kept checking and the other day the surcharge was gone and I bought
two of the 200 gal buckets for the following price.

Subtotal: $69.98
Sales Tax: $3.95
Shipping: $8.99

Grand Total: $82.92

Copied that from the bill. That's pretty reasonable for two buckets
around here.

I just went back after reading your letter and the $16 surcharge is
back again.

You might keep checking from time to time and see if they take it off
again.

Where do you see this surcharge on their website?
Please help me find it.

BTW - they do not list 200 bucket anyway at this time...
I wrote them a letter asking why and I learned it is
on backorder and should be within next 30days.

Hell of a address. :) You probably have to cut and paste because of
word wrap. Anyway you do in my reader.

But it's under fish/sal****er/salt. It's there right now. It is on
my browser anyway.

It doesn't say anything about a surcharge but start checking out and
it will be there. $16 surcharge.

You have to go clear through the checkout procedure till the last page
where you confirm.

The other day it wasn't and I hit confirm. Today it is there and I
just closed the page without confirming.

I thought it was kind of tricky for them to do it that way.

This is what I just cut and pasted from the checkout page.

Items: 601915 Synthetic Sea Salt - 200 Gallon Bucket 1 $34.99 $34.99
subtotal $34.99
tax $3.00
shipping $8.99
shipping surcharge $16.00
coupon/discount - $0.00
TOTAL $62.98

Hi Mort

WHEN did PetsMart change their tune?

All of them in St. Louis had large signs condemning reef aquarists and
would not stock anything that had to do with a reef or marine aquaria,
unless it worked in freshwater.

Because of their hatred of marine & reef aquarists, I have not set
foot in another of their stores since my first visit back when they
first opened here.

In a way, it's sad to see reef keepers shopping at a store where they
are hated so much, the store blatantly publicized that fact on their
buildings.

I would have prefered to see this chain go belly up because of their
attitude problem!

Yes, I can see it today... it was somehow missing yesterday...

Yes, when I add this bucket to my cart it shows shipping $8.99+$16 surcharge.

Maybe they just have some bug in their e-shopping software you
just exposed? Try to test it and tell us how to get it shipped for $8 ;-)

No, it's there for me too most of the time. I just kept checking and
the other day it wasn't there.

Keep checking, they may have it as a special of some kind once in a

When this day will happen just post a friendly message here for all of us :-)
I have about 1/3 of salt left in my bucket so I will not be needing it for a while
but I am already interested in searching for a deal and hit it when it happen.

That is odd, I have never seen that in Phoenix. Though they don't stock
sal****er fish at the stores I have visited.
Petco does. What do the signs say exactly? Is it some kind of corporate
policy or something. Their website has products for sal****er.

I had forgotten about petsmart, $59 after taxes.
about 35mi drive but I went during work :)
I'm not very fond of petco or petsmart. In my opinion they should
stick to drygoods ,so as a rule I stay away unless I don't have much choice.
Maybe If we could get enough people together between Milwaukee and Chicago
we could get a pallet or 2 dropshipped at a discount? Just a thought.
If we could get it cheap I'd take 2or3

That is good idea,
but what is the price break on the pallet
and how many buckets go into one pallet?

I don't know, but if there is enough folks interested I'd be happy to look further into it.
I also forgot to mention that I'm thinking it would be cheapest to have It all shipped to one place.
and then pay for it when you pick it up. There is a lot to work out but it may be worth it.We could also involve
reefs.org and reefcentral.

Hi Zoomer

I don't remember exactly what the signs said, but they were posted at
the entrance to each of the PetsMart stores in the St. Louis area.

It was something to the effect that PetsMart does not sell any
products associated with wild caught livestock, especially marine &
reef livestock.
They were quite adamant about not carrying anything associated with
marine aquaria!
While at the same time, had wild caught birds for sale!
That turned me off on them instantly and I've never been back.

This was a number of years ago, and I have not set foot inside one of
their stores since.
I do see however by surfing the web, that they are now promoting
sal****er.
WOW, that's a 180 degree turn from their original stores policy!
Around these parts we call that double faced!

Regardless of what they sell now, my first impression of them and
their policies was a total turn off. No matter what they do now, they
cannot undo what they did in the past. It will be a skeleton in their
closet forever!

I'll try to find the exact wording of the signs and their original
store policy. I know a couple of fellows that worked their when they
first opened and may still have their employment manuals which may
contain the store policy.

Not necessarily, you know many species of marine fish an inverts
are now successfully breed in captivity, so they can stick to their
policy of not selling wild caught fish and offer sal****er stuff...

It does not excuse selling wild caught birds, but maybe they are not
wild caught anymore as well... I do not know birds, so I cannot tell.

Wow Gary, I've never heard that before. I have been going there on occasion
(and for salt) for about a year now. I've never seen any disrespect like
that and they have lots of inventory for SW aquaria and plenty of Reef
suppliments.
Perhaps what you saw was an act of vandalism or the misguided intensions of
an employee?

Hi Mort

I'm going way back to when they opened their first stores here.
I'm sure a lot has changed since then!

I live a few states away from my home town now, so it's hard for me to
locate local signage of a bygone era. But I'm working on it!

Perhaps someone here worked for them back when they first opened and
may still have a copy of their policies manual to share with us.
